You don’t have to give your dog regular baths
As a breeder and trainer I often get the question: “how often should I bathe my dog?” The answer is rather simple: “never unless…..”
In point of fact dogs don’t need regular baths unless they roll in something nasty, get skunked, or peed on by their buddies. There is no specific need to give your pal a bath unless you object to that natural doggy smell, which I don’t find unpleasant.
That being said, some dogs do get stinky faster than others. For example, if my dog decides to roll in horse poop he’s going to need a bath, failing that, and other smell inducing events, my dogs, and there are seven of them, rarely get bathed.
If you must bathe your dog I recommend you use an oatmeal based dog shampoo. If you want to bathe more often than that, use a soap-free or moisturizing shampoo designed specifically for dogs, to prevent the skin from becoming dry.

The iris is made up of muscular fibers that control the amount of light entering the pupil so that you can see clearly. The iris accomplishes this task by making the pupil smaller in bright light and larger in dim light.
I have a 14 year old corgi that has never once had a bath. The only thing that smells are his teeth, but understandable based on his age. His coat is clean, and he blows out his undercoat about twice a year. I can’t imagine why people bother with it. Dog’s don’t even sweat!
I only bathe my dogs, and I have seven of them, if they roll in something Pamela. Otherwise they are free to swim in the pond, run the yard, and come in at night and sleep in the bed 🙂
Yet another reason that I’m happy to have cats, not dogs 😉
I wish I had read this before dropping my dog off at the “doggy spa” for full treatment. I spent as much as her shampoo and dry and mani/pedi (nail trim) as I spend on four months of haircuts for myself… Spoiled girl. 🙂
Hey, have we met at the dog salon? Yep, guilty as charged for my little dog too. She goes every 4 weeks and gets her nails did, including paint, sometimes, to make her pretty. She has her own cologne too, for those less than fresh days she might have 🙂 I do draw the line at dressing her up, which pleases my husband.
My dog doesn’t have cologne, but I wouldn’t hesitate to dress her up, and in fact I was quite pleased to see that the groomer had dolled her up a dapper little ladybug bandanna. 🙂 I also have yet to paint her nails, but maybe next time I give myself a french manicure, she and I can make a girl’s night of it.
We’ve got some lucky dogs!
Lucky may well be understating the state of their worlds 🙂
Yeah, well my dog is happiest when he doesn’t near water and he is part Lab.
