Black Death: LA Campgrounds Closed Due to Plague Fears
The bubonic plague, incorrectly named the “black death” has killed millions and millions of throughout history and it may not be done yet. Yersinia Pestis is the great Malthusian equalizer, once halving populations wherever it struck, killing indiscriminately and almost certainly those infected.
Times, however, have changed, with the advances in antibiotics, but any hint of the return of Y. Pestis needs to be dealt with quickly.
(Newser) A plague threat has shut down campgrounds around Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times reports. A ground squirrel in the area was found to have the plague, which can be transmitted to humans through fleas, a health official says. “It is important for the public to know that there have only been four cases of human plague in Los Angeles County residents since 1984, none of which were fatal,” the official notes.
Still, “as a precaution,” sections of the Table Mountain campgrounds in the Angeles National Forest have been closed for at least a week as of Wednesday. There are an average seven cases of plague per year in the US, ABC News notes (here’s an example); it can be treated with antibiotics.
This news will no doubt be a boon to those Crazy Christians who are convinced that doomsday is nigh.

Yep, that is CA for you. Find one poor diseased little squirrel and 7 cases in one year in the WHOLE country of 300 million, 4 cases in a state of 30+ million over almost 30yrs and we must shutter things. Same thing happens when it rains here, people see these odd droplets of water and some become very disoriented and get worse with their driving habits. Sometimes things are taken way too seriously but hey, that’s just me thinking thoughts.
Mike you’re so right! This will get those wacky apocalypse prophets all stirred up. Argh…The rats are among us and Jesus is coming!
OK, if the meteor has been delayed, this may have to be a temporary measure.
This will get those Crazy Christians pumped up!!
