Were Columbus Alive He Would Be On Death Row Awaiting Execution

Read Time:1 Minute, 23 Second

It’s Columbus Day, folks, and that means it’s time to honor a man “who, if he were alive today, would almost certainly be sitting on Death Row awaiting execution.”

Eric Kasum, writing for The Huffington Post, commemorates the holiday by recounting the true tale of Christopher Columbus, who set foot on a sandy Bahamian beach in 1492 and promptly enslaved the hospitable islanders (who rescued the crew and cargo of the shipwrecked Santa Maria). Within two years, half of the 250,000-strong population was dead.

He oversaw the sale of native girls into sexual slavery, killed babies to use as dog food, and had soldiers cut off the hands of workers who didn’t meet their gold dust quota—prompting 100 to commit mass suicide. Why don’t we learn about this in school, Kasum asks. “Columbus himself kept detailed diaries, as did some of his men. (If you don’t believe me, just Google the words Columbus, sex slave, and gold mine.)” He continues, “Call me crazy, but I think holidays ought to honor people who are worthy of our admiration. Let’s boycott this outrageous holiday because it honors a mass murderer.”

It’s time we take a second look at those we celebrate. Clearly Christopher Columbus would never stand the scrutiny. How about “Native American Day,” as it’s called in South Dakota. After all it’s not the murderer we should be celebrating, but the murdered.  Celebrating Columbus Day, after all, is a celebration of genocide.

But, but, are you saying that what we were taught in school was wrong? How can that be? That would be as absurd as forcing students to participate in school prayer every day. Oh, that! Oops.

There’s an entire industry surrounding national holidays, as well as closing down banks, the USPS, and government offices (although this year many of them are shut down because of the shutdown). Millions and millions of dollars change hands so the money men see dollar signs when they see holidays. All over the country people are celebrating Christopher Columbus and recognizing him as the man who discovered America, which he actually didn’t. It’s all a sham.

Thousands of pages have been written about this man’s evil adventures, and yet we still celebrate him. Why? Why do we celebrate genocide as Mike asks? Do the politicians NEVER listen to the people or is there just too much revenue tied up in Christopher Columbus? This is soooooo wrong.
