4 Things to Keep in Mind When Building a Home for a Budding Family

Read Time:3 Minute, 43 Second

Building a new home is an exciting but often stressful and overwhelming experience. When it’s all over, though, you want to be able to say that your home is exactly what you were looking for, that it’s perfectly suited for your family, and that you couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. That hope is where some of the stress comes from, especially when your family is in its growing stages.

How in the world will you plan a layout and features for a house that’ll be the place where your children will grow up? There are so many needs that’ll change as your family grows and changes, so making such permanent decisions that’ll address all of them is very nerve-wracking.

Location, Location, Location

This can’t be stressed enough. As cliché as it sounds, the location you choose to build your house will make a huge impact on your lasting love for your home. Take care to select an area that suits your personal values. For instance, if you’re accustomed to a rural atmosphere, don’t choose a location that is in the heart of a city or will likely be urbanized within the next 10 years.

Also, consider the school district you’d like your children to attend and factor that into your decision as well. School district boundaries change from time to time, so you may not want to be close to the edge of your desired district. New homes in Dallas, Texas have a nice variety of locations to choose from, from urban to rural areas.

Family Size

How many people will be calling this new house home? Life happens and plans change, so now that you’re thinking of building a home you should think long and hard about your family planning decisions. If you foresee yourself having a few children within the next 10 years, anticipate building a home that can accommodate them.

Furthermore, do you have relatives that’ll be visiting often? It’s tempting to disregard these visits, as they’ll only happen a few times a year, but it’s largely these things that make a house a home. If at all possible, leave room for your beloved guests so your family can stay together for occasions and events.

Your Room Wish List

As you’re brainstorming about your new abode, make an ideal wish list. Put things on the list that you’d like to see in your home in a perfect world. Be optimistic about your list. This is a way to be honest with yourself and to get the ball rolling about prioritizing different wants and needs.

Think of the areas your current home is lacking that you want incorporated into your new home. Does a member of your family like to exercise at home? Maybe you have a handy man in the family or a kid who likes to build things. If so, a yoga/exercise room and a workshop might find their way onto your room wish list. If one of you works from home or does a lot  of cooking, you’ll want to include a home office and a kitchen with a nice pantry and lots of storage space.

Layout Options

This is another area that future family plans will come into play. If you plan to have more children, it’ll be nice to lay out your home in a way that allows you to move the children’s rooms around as they mature and gain independence. Perhaps a nursery or small bedroom would be appropriate to place near the master bedroom. Other, larger bedrooms can be placed across the home for older children to give them more independence. Each time you welcome a new member of your family, or as your children grow, you can move them around to a new area that suits them.

This is another area where you’ll want to look at your tendencies and hobbies, as well as the terrain in which you live. If you have a tendency to come and go often, and you live in an area that is prone to mud and snow, you may want to have a side door or mud room to use to cut down on the amount of debris you’ll track into the house.

As you go about the planning process of building your new home, keep these things in mind. With proper planning and self-reflection, you’ll be able to build a home that your family will cherish for a long time to come.
