Aussies Devise Idiotic Plan For Deterring Shark Attacks

Over the last two years six people have been killed by sharks in Western Australia, out of the hundreds of thousands that bathe in those waters.  Officials are so alarmed by the number of deaths they have decided to set hooks so as to bait sharks, that is draw them closer to the beaches, and thus put an end to shark feeding.  What an idiotic idea.

They’re set to install 72 baited hooks attached to floats near eight popular beaches, Time reports. Under the plan, some sharks will be fatally trapped, the Guardianreports. And if contracted fishermen see a shark longer than 10 feet nearby, it will be their job to kill the animal.

Fortunately, conservationists and their supporters are fuming at the plan: Last weekend saw a gathering of 4,500 in Perth to protest. “What they are doing is illegal and violates 15 different United Nations conventions and treaties,” notes one activist. It could also hurt other species; in fact, the “bycatch” of drum lining, as the practice is called, is five times the target catch, meaning dolphins, whales, turtles, and other species could be killed.

Even more controversial: The approach targets the endangered great white shark. There’s also concern among scuba divers that the plan could backfire, the Guardian notes: The bait could encourage sharks to come closer to shore, they say.

Australian officials, clearly uninformed when it comes to the habits of sharks, are standing firm:

While we understand this policy will be divisive and cause anxiety for some in the community, it is clear that the number of fatalities in recent years required a stronger response.

Idiots!

You guys are all nuts. What we republicans would do is arm all swimmers so they could defend themselves against the godless sharks. And oh yeah. Naturally the liberals name the man eating killer shark “Great White.” Another attempt to paint white people as villains.

I wonder whether such a tactic could be transferred onto dry land and adapted for use against loan sharks? Just a thought. A daft one I know….

Sharks are quite frightening I guess if you happen to be in ones mouth but they are as entitled as any life form to exist.

Killing them so humanity can go for a swim or a surf is just sick.

Typical, but sick.

Not Neanderthals Mike, but Republicans, yep. The problem here is similar to legislatures everywhere. People get elected and they think they know the answer to everything. My best example is dealing with crime problem. They enact laws and punishment with no background at all in how to deal with the crime problem and it is clear that our current approach is not working too well.
I don’t supposed it occurred to anyone to simply fence off swimming areas and post signs saying “Leave This Area At Your Own Risk”. I mean, at some point humans have to admit that the oceans belong to the fishes. If we go out there we are on their turf. We are not the normal prey of sharks and it is rare when people who know and understand sharks get eaten by sharks. Its the other idiots that haven’t a clue what they are doing but have the arrogance to think that we own the sea.

Politicians are the same all over the world. They find it impossible to do anything that doesn’t make the situation worse.

Really, how many things can we think of where government has involved itself that it hasn’t made worse?
