So it’s going to be like the CHP thing where they bring old beat up cars to high school juniors to show us what happens when you are involved in a drunk driving accident then? Useless but gets you out of some boring class or another 🙂

Maybe worse Jess. They could get a couple of old beat up cars from a junk yard and say there where in this accident because … (pick your reason). The ugliness of what happens just as some nuts loose control and starts pulling triggers is difficult to replicate. Be it domestic violence, neighborhood disputes or road rage these idiots put their brain in neutral while they start blasting away.
In one of my capital murder cases an 81 year old man who had bought and moved into a home in Wetumptka, AL. He was a rather odd duck being a military retiree and living alone in fairly large house. One day he discovered the his next door neighbor (who had sold him the home) had a fence that was 6 inches onto his property. This had been done twenty years prior when the neighbor’s father had owned the home.
Mr. Johnson (our client) immediately demanded that the fence moved back to the original property line. He called a surveyor to redraw the original property line and the police to enforce it. Well the police could not enforce it (civil law) and the surveyor advised him of the law of imminent domain which means that if someone is allowed to possess the land for 20 years with out objection he can claim it as his own. So Mr. Johnson gets some fence posts and begins to reconstruct a fence on the original property line. The other property owner comes out and complains and his friend from across the street gets involved by joining the argument. The police are called and they advise them to settle it in court. He immediately continues with his new fence and they start arguing again. This time he goes into his house and comes out with a shotgun, shots the property owner and his wife, and goes across the street to their friend’s house and shoots him through the door. Mr. Johnson told me he had every legal right to protect his land from interlopers that were trying to steal his land. He said he had a constitutional right to do this and he truly believed it. This thinking pattern has found its way into a lot of shootings lately especially since the “stand your ground” legislation has taken root in so many states. Someone knocks on your door in the middle of the night, shoot them because you felt that your life was in danger. I truly worry much less about being shot and killed by a terrorist attack, a mass shooting, or a terrorist attack than I do being shot and killed by an acquaintance, or relative who is under a preconceived notion of misunderstood facts. If I were black I would also give up jogging for fear that a police officer might think a am fleeing the scene of a crime and my Walkman Radio was a weapon. Give me a criminal any day who just wants to rob me over a well meaning good citizen who “thinks” he is doing the right thing. The criminal knows what he is doing whereas the citizen does not.

I agree Glenn. Before the turn of the last century there were many towns and cities which lived by the gun where the better one was with a gun the longer they lived. Are we revisiting history? For some they would prefer it I am sure, but with that belief civilization goes out the window. What these people are living is a televised version of life where the good guys win in the end. The only problem is that the whole gun thing is really not about the right to have and carry guns, it is the myth that if everyone was armed they could stop criminals. Most fatalities by guns do not arise out of actions by what we normally think of as criminals. Rather it is usually a situation of domestic violence, neighborhood dispute, an act of domestic terrorism, international terrorism, accident, or someone who has serious mental health issues. In each of these problems the accessibility to guns become the problem not the solution. If we could control the easy access to guns we actually could control the number of deaths from guns.

Back when I was a daily commuter, having acts of aggravated assault aimed at me was a daily occurrence and I know full well that there is a point — and it comes on you suddenly — of no return after which you’re going to retaliate without restraint. Some people actually enjoy this massive adrenaline rush with it’s complete and exhilarating loss of inhibition. It’s demonstrably addictive and people seek out the kind of insult that allows you to let go and try to run someone off the road just to see him die. There are people quite willing to kill you for giving them the finger even if it was very well deserved. I’m not different except perhaps in degree, but very person has his point of no return.

Now put a gun in that man’s pocket.

Lack of training is one thing, lack of emotional self control, intolerance for disrespect and aggression — all sorts of personality traits can put you at the point where that gun is going to appear in your hand and the trigger will be pulled well before you can think about it.

We convince ourselves that we will be invincible and in fact one feels an initial sense of calm and confidence with a concealed weapon. It’s only in rare cases that it’s not false and if we’re lucky the realization happens that we’re a bigger danger to ourselves than others are to us.

Well, looking at places like historical Deadwood and Dodge City the “no law, just guys with guns” idea really works well — if you’re staging a cowboy movie, that is. I guess you have to do away with police completely since no one’s going to take the job where everyone and his baby sister is armed, but that’s OK. Every man will be his own law and peace will reign just like it does in Syria.

It will absolutely work just fine as school disputes work themselves out and after a while nobody will be going to school anyway. They’ll stay home in the family fortress and be home schooled and learn what they need to know without any of that Liberal propaganda.

i hope these brave patriots are going to use live ammo too, just so that they can demonstrate how well this works.
