Noam Chomsky: Republican Party A Radical Insurgency and a Threat to Human Survival

This year’s group of republican aspirants, with perhaps the exception of John Kasich, would make Looney Tunes look like a gathering of political scientists.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Noam Chomsky spelled in no uncertain terms why every conscientious American needs to ensure a Democrat becomes president at the end of this election cycle.

“Today, the Republican Party has drifted off the rails,” Chomsky told the Huff Post. “It’s become what the respected conservative political analysts Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein call ‘a radical insurgency’ that has pretty much abandoned parliamentary politics.” Furthermore, Chomsky labeled the party and the candidates running for president as “literally a serious danger to decent human survival”.

Chomsky usually doles out his withering criticisms to both parties in equal measure, but interestingly his tone is markedly different in recent years due to the extreme policies advocated by the Republican Party — policies that would have devastating implications for future generations, particularly when it comes to the environment. When almost all of the major Republican presidential candidates either don’t believe in global warming, or don’t believe anything needs to be done about it, no rational person should even think about voting for them if they want their children to survive beyond the next 50 years.

As Chomsky notes, the differences between the two parties are not actually that big from a broader perspective — the Republicans and Democrats are essentially two sub groups of one big political party that represents corporate and financial interests in America — but the small differences between then can make, as Chomsky says, a “huge difference in systems of enormous power”.

This is a stance any practical progressive should take regardless of which Democrat they are supporting. It isn’t sexy, but putting aside ideological purity for the sake of keeping the GOP out of power is an absolute must if we are at all serious about creating a better future for ourselves, our children and our planet. Chomsky’s dire warning may sound hyperbolic, but when Donald Trump is the leading Republican candidate for president, it may well be an understatement.
