Death In Cabin 28: The Unsolved Keddie Murders of California

Read Time:5 Minute, 35 Second

On the night of April 11, 1981, three victims—a mother, her adolescent son, and the son’s friend—were bludgeoned to death in a California cabin while children slept soundly in an adjacent room. A fourth victim—the mother’s 12-year-old daughter—vanished in the night, her remains found years later and many miles away.

The slayings are chilling enough. Yet the case is made all the more unsettling by the fact that it remains unsolved, leading some to suspect a police cover-up.

Glenna Sharp—who went by the name Sue—had been renting Cabin 28 in the tiny community of Keddie, California since November of 1980. She lived there with her five children. On the night of the murders, Sue was at home while her two youngest sons and one of their friends played in an adjacent room. Tina, Sue’s youngest daughter, returned home around 10 o’clock, after an evening of watching television with the neighbors in Cabin 27.

The following morning, Sue’s oldest daughter Sheila came home after a night spent with friends. Upon entering, she discovered three bodies on the living room floor of Cabin 28.

The bodies belonged to Sue, John, and Dana. A search of the premises revealed the trio of younger boys still in their room, alive and unharmed. With the help of neighbors, Sheila removed the three children. The fourth victim, 12-year-old daughter Tina, was nowhere to be found.

Various weapons were found at the scene, including a table knife, a butcher knife, and a bloody hammer. Other weapons—including the Daisy rifle—were not recovered. Some evidence, such as a second bloody knife, turned up in a trash bin behind the Keddie general store.

Several suspects were named in the case. Among them was Marty Smartt, a neighbor of the Smart family and close friend of the local sheriff, and “Bo” Boubede, a supposed hitman for the Chicago and Las Vegas mobs. Many of the suspects were said to have been former romantic partners or spurned paramours of Sue Sharp. Despite considerable evidence and police questioning, no arrests were made.

In April of 1984, three years after the slayings occurred, part of a skull was found 29 miles away near Camp Eighteen in neighboring Butte County. The discovery prompted a thorough examination of the area, revealing a jawbone and several other bones. The fragments were eventually determined to belong to young Tina.

The discovery of Tina’s remains compounded a case already steeped in mystery. Why was the body of Tina Sharp found so far away from Cabin 28? How could a murder with so much physical evidence remain unsolved? The abundance of loose threads, in conjunction with what appeared to be a substandard investigation, have prompted some to suspect a police cover-up.

In 2004, Cabin 28 was demolished along with several other condemned buildings on the grounds. While theorists postulate possible mob connections and police complicity in the killings, the complete facts in the case may never be known. The strange Keddie murders remain unsolved to this day.

UPDATE: In November 2016, the true crime show “People Magazine Investigates” released an episode dedicated to reexamining the Keddie murders. Several new pieces of evidence and information came to light, which may, in time, finally help crack this cold case.

First, though the primary suspects in the slayings, Marty Smartt and Bo Boubede, are now deceased, new details continue to emerge that suggest their culpability. According to People magazine, Smartt was angry that Sue Sharp had been interfering in his marriage. After the murders, he wrote a letter to his wife Marilyn, which was only discovered after the case was reopened in 2013:

“I’ve paid the price of your love & now that I’ve bought it with four peoples lives, you tell me we are through … Great! What else do you want?”

Though Marilyn claims she never received the letter, and was only made aware of it by the authorities, she confirmed Smartt’s handwriting.

Even more potentially incriminating is a therapist in Reno, Nevada, to whom Smartt allegedly confessed to the killing. Strangely, this confession was never used by investigators in trying to bring charges against Smartt.

The final bizarre piece to the puzzle? A copy of a 911 call recording, found at the bottom of a Keddie murder case file box. The call dates back to 1984, in the weeks after skull fragments were first discovered in Butte County. The anonymous caller identified the remains as belonging to Tina Sharp, then hung up. Chillingly, records indicate that this caller knew the remains belonged to Tina before investigators confirmed the fact with dental records.

Mike Gamberg, who leads the current investigation, is baffled by these inconsistencies. “It’s not what was done,” he told the Sacramento Bee in reference to the many flaws of the original investigation. “It’s what wasn’t done.”

Though the original inquiry into the Keddie murders was—suspiciously—shoddy, there is new hope that the authorities of today may be able to grant the Sharps justice once and for all.

Each of us has a suitable comprehension of the advice supplied to the
public, so I truly enjoyed the guide and expected you to provide us with additional things like this
one.

Oops, I meant ‘caller KNEW it was Tina’. And, sorry for the poor punctuation… My comma button sticks, and half the time doesn’t work.

You’ve done a lot of research on this case but continue to mold things to fit your theory. Maybe YOU need to read the letter because it is very clear you either have never read the letter or hope the rest of us haven’t so you can twist it’s meaning. Sue, Johnny, Dana, and Tina were not “4” of the most precious things in his life” and certainly were not “his flesh and blood”.
If Marty Smartt had just murdered 4 people this letter definitely isn’t proof of anything but his love for Marilyn and his children which he had given up to be with her. But I KNOW that your are way too smart to really believe it is!!

On February 6, 2011 Josh Hancock posted the Love Letters from Marty to Marilyn on his forum. This is what he posted:

In the Sequel to the original documentary, we reveal excerpts from “love” letters written by one of the suspects in the case. These letters were provided to us during filming by a source that asked to remain anonymous. Here are the letters in full.

Dear Marilyn,
First off, you know that I haven’t tried to hurt you with my letters. I’m writing this after our phone call Monday (4-27). Marilyn, there’s two things I want you to know; the first is that I love you & I don’t care what has happened. Now is the time to start over. Call now!

You don’t know how much I suffered before I met you. I asked God to send me someone who would care for me. I thought he sent you. I remember the hour, the words that were said; I said your ph number a thousand times that night.

I’ve given you my heart. All of it! Please try & think back. What do you think I’ve paid for you.

For three years I’ve heard about your kids; Don’t get me wrong I love them too! Now I’ll ask! What about mine? Don’t you think I love them? Honey I gave up four of the most precious things in my life; for what? For you! The answer is simple!

Now I’ll ask you. Why should I love your kids more than mine. I’ve tried! That’s more than you can say. I don’t think you ever loved me much less my kids and yet you expect this from me & I’ve given it to you. I’ve paid the price of your love & now that I have bought it with four people lives, you tell me we are through. Great! What else do you want?

I’ve paid the price! I’ve given my flesh & blood for you. I’ll gladly pay your bills. Just send them in! You know that I love you more than my own kids. Can you say that? I know you have given up a lot to be with me. But I don’t think you know what I’ve paid. Yes, I’m jealous! For the price I’ve paid I should be. You can’t seem to understand how bad you have hurt me. I’m crawling back! Take me! I’ve paid for your love. Please give it back at least once. If you don’t, you know you’ve stolen my heart and given it to the street.

I love you. Think about what I’ve given up for you,
Marde
Call me!
Please don’t wait till it’s too late! I’ve given it all! What else do you want!

{And as a separate document}:

Oh God I love you more than life. Please forgive me, Marilyn
love,
Marde
I’m sorry

{And as a separate document}:

This moment of sadness brought to you from your loving wife, who you will never stop loving or will you ever forget Willie Nelson

Help me make it

There are many errors in your article: Although the murders are sometimes called the “Keddie Cabin” murders, there are no cabins in the town. Several of the wood-frame houses have a ‘log cabin’ facade, they aren’t cabins. 28 was a wood frame house with no such facade.

Tina was most likely killed alongside the others as collateral damage and Sue- the sole target- killed last. The case is not cold or unsolved, and is very close to grand jury stage. A cover-up is no longer suspected; it is proved. Harry Bradley and Prince Albert Crim were criminals working for the CA-DOJ and actively participated in this cover-up alongside then-sheriff Doug Thomas and others on his staff. There are at least six others suspected in participating or otherwise helping in the murders & coverup. I’ve named them on my site, keddie28.com.

Greg & Rick Sharp were not ‘playing in another room’ with Justin Smartt; they all watched TV in the living room with Sue. Greg, five at the time, went to bed first sleeping on the cot. Justin and Rick went for the bunk beds shortly after Tina came home and went to bed.

After running, screaming from 28, Sheila returned with Jamie Seabolt to retrieve the younger boys. Jamie then went up the back stairs and through the ajar back door and searching the house. Also, it’s believed Sue’s brother Don, arrived before police, and also entered the house.

Many members of LE, including the aforementioned crooked ‘cops’, knew Marty and Bo were involved, but they weren’t officially named as suspects until last year. In fact ‘Sheriff’ Thomas only publicly named the I-5 Killer, Randall Woodfield, as a suspect despite the fact Woodfield had been very publicly apprehended and jailed a full month prior to the Keddie murders. These murders were no mystery to the bad cops and others in-the-know.

Marilyn Smartt is also fully involved. She’s lying when she says she didn’t remember the letter, because she’s the one to whom it was delivered by USPS and she’s the one that gave it to PCSO – probably in her ongoing attempts to implicate Marty while distancing herself from his involvement. Crim and Bradley intentionally covered up Marty’s confession by falsifying their reports lying to indicate the confession was hearsay misconstrued by Marty’s therapist from things he misunderstood that Marty’s wife said. In other words Crim and Bradley claimed the doctor heard Marilyn say things during Marty’s therapy sessions, and somehow misconstrued them to be a confession from Marty. This thinly-veiled pile of BS is in direct contradiction to other reports, and the therapist’s own account of events: This was a direct confession from Martin Smartt, and the therapist never met Marilyn, much less let her attend Marty’s sessions.

We’ve known about much of this for YEARS; People didn’t reveal anything we hadn’t been discussing on the keddie28 forum for years. We’ve been discussing Marty’s confession, where he detailed much of how and why he did it. He called Sue “an extreme bitch” who was meddling in his marriage. It’s also been insisted by many who knew Marty that he was perhaps sexually fixated on Sue. Marty;s ‘confession letter’ was posted on the forum years ago, and we’ve debated it’s importance ever since. He mentioned “four” people many times in the letter, and the ‘four peoples lives’ comment could just as much be a poorly-disguised ref to Keddie as it could be a ref to his own children. The trouble is, Marty had five kid, and in no way could ‘paid with lives’ be deemed a logical reference to his five kids all of whom are still alive.

Finally, as for the taped call, that was not “lost”. I brought it to Mike Gamberg’s attention, that both the original and backup dub had been signed out of evidence by BCSO, but the form was unsigned. In other words, we had no clues as to who took the tapes, or where they were. Mike was able to locate more documents concerning the tape, then finally found them in the box- a mere week after I’d brought their existence and disappearance to his attention. Who’d checked out both copies before they ‘disappeared’ for 35 years? That dirty bastard PA ‘Mike Crim, of course. We have some ideas as to who the voice on the tape belongs to, and there are too many odd coincidences involving who found her, where she was found, and when (three years after the murders, TO THE DAY?!). However, it’s a complete mischaracterization of the tape’s content, or at least the portion publicly known, to state emphatically that the killer KNEW it was Tina.
