Stop the Reckless Repeal Of Affordable Healthcare: Call Republican Congressmen NOW

Read Time:3 Minute, 7 Second

by Dr Mark Bear

Today, the Affordable Care Act is in danger: BIG danger of being repealed and replaced. Many of you saw my previous story of my having Systemic Lupus, and the ensuing complications I have experienced. However, I am NOT the only person who will suffer should this bill get passed and somehow makes it through the Senate.

The latest amendment which places a mere 8 Billion dollars to go to high risk pools, is going to be spread over FIVE Years. I did some calculations last night and what I found is that means it will cover 8000 people for a ONE MILLION dollar cost. That’s it.

There are over 300 million people living in this nation folks, and that amount is nowhere near what is needed to cover the costs associated with people having cancer, congenital heart disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and a host of other illnesses that I could write volumes over. THOSE people will suffer just as I will. Perhaps many of you will too. Do not be fooled into believing the latest amendment will fix the pre-existing conditions aspect because it will not.

So, what can you do? Contact a Republican Congressional Representative. Look folks: If you take this on, please do not be rude to any of the people who answer the phones as they are merely doing their jobs. I ask that before the task. Then, if you feel you can get beyond your anger, contact a representative.

This is my recommended conversation with an Aide:

Aide Answers: Hi, My name is _________, and I am calling about the health care bill which is going to be voted on today. While I am not one of the Congressman (womans) constituents, I do (either know somebody with a pre-existing condition or HAVE a pre-existing condition). Please be honest with the Aide. In other words, if you do not have a pre-existing condition, do not tell them you do.

Then, tell the Aide: “I realize Congressman (woman) ________needs to cast his/her vote today and all I ask is that Congressman (woman) remembers either (a) the person with the pre-existing condition, or (B) me (meaning you) as he casts his/her vote. Ask him/her if he/she had a loved one with the condition I explained to you, would he/she still vote for the Bill? Second, should the Senate not vote on the measure, and leave Congressman/woman under the bus, how will he or she feel?

You will notice I put two things into this script which are truthful: the personal appeal and the political appeal.

The ACA has never been in more grave danger than today. A vote will take place and in light of Nancy Pelosi’s statement made last night, it appears they have the votes.

We need only flip FOUR VOTES to make the measure fail. I can think of no better way to do this, however I am open to suggestions. Click the link to find a spreadsheet with all of the representatives and their direct numbers. I reached quite a few this morning, and then I reached a few that said the Congressman was not available and his or her voicemail was full. Whether this was a strategy of the caucus or not, I know not.

Finally, the only reason I admonished nobody to be rude is I realize how angry most of us are regarding this bill. According to the latest Wall Street Journal and ABC News Poll, 61% of Americans do NOT want the law repealed. The link is in the first comment. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide to all those who have a pre-existing condition.
