Capitol Police, Members of Congress and Aides Shot At Baseball Practice

Read Time:2 Minute, 50 Second

by Mark Bear

Shots were fired this morning at an early practice baseball game for GOP congressional representatives and others.  The game, pitting democrats against republicans, is an annual charity event.

Injuries have been reported, and several people were transported to the hospital. Republican Congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana was shot in the hip and is said to be in stable condition. In addition, it is being reported that an Aide of Congressman Scalise’s has also been shot, as well as two Capitol policeman, credited for taking out the gunman and saving lives.  Other sources indicate two aides to be injured by the gunman.

Fox News reports that at least 50 shots were fired at the Alexandria, Virginia baseball stadium. However, multiple outlets have reported various numbers regarding how many shots have been fired.

MSNBC reports that two Capitol Officers have been shot and are being taken to the Hospital as well. Steve Scalise, the Republican Congressman from Louisiana is currently listed in stable condition.

The outlet further reports now that the gunman is in custody, however, whether the shooter was shot prior to being taken into custody, is not yet known.

Reports have suggested that gunshots were fired in the direction of second base where the Congressional Representatives were engaged in practice for the Annual Charity event. So far, a total of four have been reported shot, and details are still emerging.

Senator Rand Paul who was present at the practice and standing in a batter’s cage practicing his swing when the incident occurred reports to MSNBC that at a minimum, he heard fifty shots fired. He indicates that thankfully the Capitol Police were present to get the situation under control. The Kentucky Senator states he believes there will be more people reported wounded, however, as of this reporting, no new victims have been reported or can be confirmed.

Further statements by Senator Paul indicate that only Republicans were practicing at this particular field – Simpson Field – while Democrats were reported to be practicing at another venue. It is being reported that Capitol Police immediately went to the practice venue of the Democrats to ensure protection. Paul states that Senator Duncan spoke to the shooter prior to the incident occurring.

MSNBC is now reporting that the two Capitol Police Officers – who were Congressman Scalice’s security detail – are being listed in stable condition.

Congressman Ron DeSantis states the shooter came up and specifically asked whether it was “Republicans or Democrats practicing” today, and of course, DeSantis told the soon to be shooter that it was Republicans. Whether the incident was targeted or not, has not yet been determined as of this time.

Reports have continued indicating school children were walking no more than one block away from the venue when the incident took place. In addition, the local YMCA experienced their windows being shot out as the barrage of bullets took place.

Pete Williams from NBC News reports that a total of six have been injured in today’s shooting. While both the Alexandria Police Chief and The Capitol Police Chief spoke today at an earlier news conference, they stress they cannot answer questions at this time and that the investigation is ongoing. Mr. Williams did, however, confirm that the shooter was injured during the incident and has been taken to the hospital. A second press conference, held just a few minutes ago, differed little from the first.

Yes, it’s all about the guns and not about the Nazi in the White House. So much has bee written of late about the near comic inability of people to compare risks and here’s another example.

Hello Glenn,

Can you clarify or expound your point for me so I am certain I understand you with certainty? I look forward to your response. Thank you in advance.

Still the Wild West then after all these years?

Very courageous police by all accounts.

The fact that he asked who was on that field whether it was Republicans or Democrats does point to the targets he sought to shoot at. The fact that he spoke to a Republican who verified this and then shot directly at the area where Scalise was standing indicates that was probably his intended target.

Hi Maria,

Yes, it seems by all reporting that this was an intended target due to his asking whether it was Republicans or Democrats. I believe the authorities have asked anyone with any information about this man to forward it to them (the FBI) including those who have information regarding his social media. Still, though, I do not condone violence on ANY person, specifically a person occupying one of our federal offices. I say this only due to the plethora of hateful commentary I saw posted after this incident occurred. I have seen literally every justification for these the behavior of the shooter, including the following; “He was frustrated due to the lack of attention paid to middle-class Americans,” to “income inequality being the driver justifying the action,” to, “posts replicating Mr. Scalise’s advocating second amendment rights.” While each of the posts had a kernel of truth in them, I just wonder how in the world people can be so heartless. At the end of the day, we all are Americans. I may not like what the Congressman stands for politically, but I surely do not advocate violence or taking up arms to injure another who is on the opposite side of politics. For to do so, demonstrates a lack of our own humanity and civility!
