Stop TrumpCare: Call Your Senators Now Before It’s Too Late

Read Time:4 Minute, 10 Second

by Dr Mark Bear

I am making the most impassioned plea I can to each of you this afternoon regarding the current Reconciliation Act before the Senate today. In case you have not heard, the Senate will be holding a procedural vote which will determine whether the Bill can be voted upon.

A couple points need to be made here:

First, it is not all that uncommon for Senators to vote FOR a bill to go forward to a vote only to turn around and cast a NO vote on the day the vote is finally held. In this case however, especially in light of the current Bill having an approval rating of a mere 13% of Americans according to polling agencies, I find it nearly difficult to believe ANY Senator would utilize this strategy in order to advance the bill. Why? Because even if the bill advance and failed, that particular Senator’s vote would be on record and used against him or her during the next election.

Second, when calling those Senators which I provide the list for below, please remember what I have said in the past: Respectfully make the call. If you cannot exercise restraint, it is better that you not call at all. The very people answering the phones are merely Aides to these Senators, and it is not their fault that the Senator is thinking about voting for it. In a similar vein, please utilize extreme caution when making statements: For example, you do NOT want to make ANY statement which intimates a threat. An example of this is as follows: “Well you can tell the Senator that he will not be in office after this next election.” You will notice the statement does not explicitly state the reason why that senator will not be in office, and could easily be construed as a threat. Please remember: We just had a congressional member and several other people get shot. They are obviously NOT going to offer any latitude on this issue.

Third, we want to try to get three more senators in addition to Senators Heller and Collins to vote against moving forward to a vote. Why? Remember Mitch McConnell can engage in some political horse-trading in order to obtain a vote from either a moderate or conservative. Let us not make the mistake of underestimating McConnell’s political ability. Therefore, if you have followed the debate thus far – whatever part was made public which is not much – look at why the particular Senator is AGAINST the bill as he or she states. Then use THAT as YOUR reason for not wanting the bill advancing. That is called politics folks! Speak their language, because it appears they do not care about ours, do they?

Fourth, just because we hear a Senator say now that they are not “FOR” the bill, let us not allow the media to tell us they ARE going to vote against it. In other words folks, the only thing that matters now, are the votes themselves. My experience as an analyst tells me that McConnell believes he can get this bill advanced today, and perhaps passed, or he would not be placing the bill before the body in order to move it forward to a vote. Think about it: Why would he jeopardize other Senate seats due to their voting on something that is this unpopular, and put that seat in danger for the upcoming mid-term. I would not, and I have to believe McConnell would not either.

Fifth, do NOT trust the Whip count as shared in the media. Please see above for further explanation.

Finally, I am certain each of us believes we do not have the time to do this today. Perhaps each of our schedules ARE demanding and we are short on time. I made my calls and was finished in 35 minutes however my very own Senator Bill Cassidy has had his phone on voice mail for over two days now. You will recall they did this over in the House during the passage of the Bill through their body, and I reported out on that strategy.

However, 24 MILLION estimated Americans are going to lose their coverage should we NOT act now. Also, remember premiums under this proposal are estimated to increase nearly FIVE TIMES than what we paid under the ACA. Furthermore, remember how many vulnerable and elderly will lose their Medicaid, and of course, let us not forget those of us with pre-existing conditions who will effectively be priced out of the market and women who will not be able to obtain their screenings or other needs. In a similar vein, think of all of those jobs which will ultimately lost due to the impact on rural hospitals and providers. Do you still believe we have the luxury of not having sufficient time to take out of our schedule to call these senators? These people are relying on us to lobby these senators folks!

I call every week. I know some of the aides by name.

I called everyone on the list, talked to a living person about one-third of the time, a recording for about half the time, and just an answerer with no option to leave a message the other half the time.
