The history of violence in America goes back to the birth of this country. There was an effort early on in New York to copy the London style policing in 1845. However, this new country was still in its wildest times of development. Many of the officers carried their own personal weapons. There was no doubt that at least some of the bad guys had weapons. This is where we got it wrong because instead of getting control of the gun problem they simply authorized the officers to carry guns and the race was on.
