Roy Moore, Rebels, Religion, and A Princess of Argos

Shakespeare’s MacBeth: Cauldron boil, cauldron bubble…

by Glenn R. Geist

Roy Moore, rebels and religion, and, if you’ll forgive the mixed references, as weird as any three sisters who ever stirred a pot.

I may be the last man standing when it comes to insisting that you don’t convict someone on the basis of rumor or unsubstantiated accusation or an ad hoc mob of Facebookers, but we’re not talking about putting Roy Moore where he probably belongs, we’re only talking about choosing another candidate for Senator.

It seems difficult to prove the stories about him having been banned from a local mall for stalking teen age girls. The evidence is mostly circumstantial and the accusations are too old to be actionable, or so it appears, but so much from so many sources and some of it having been made so long ago makes it obvious that for the purposes of rejecting him with extreme prejudice, it’s more than enough. It’s a moral obligation and necessary for the preservation of civilization.

But the problem with America is that while we will hang on to bigoted, mean and destructive lies with passion, inconvenient truth that interferes with political and tribal identification will be not only rejected, but vilified and demonized – forever. Roy Moore is one of them, not one of the hated liberal North and its hated Liberal, elite Gummint.

In a place, rightly or wrongly identified with shotgun marriages and mob justice — a place like Alabama — what might get someone lynched for smiling at a 16-year-old Southern Belle, being white and paying lip service to the local religion, seems proof against it. Proof against protection against prosecution, against being dragged to death naked behind a pick’em up or castrated and burned alive, or simply being filled with buckshot by an irate father.

So important is maintaining that “rebel” identification, many Alabamians will, like Agamemnon at Aulis, sacrifice their own daughters to their disgraced cause;  their disgraceful religious pretense, or to the GOP and its disgraced champion.

Besides she was asking for it. Look how she’s dressed

Agamemnon never really liked Iphigenia anyway, so it was no great loss.

You say togato, I say togayto, but I’ll bet Roy has a sheet or two hanging in his closet. He’s already told us his “dates” were young enough that he had to ask their mothers for permission. After all a woman might know that his little pea shooter was only a cap gun

Denialism is the tribal religion. The news is fake, they’re all out to get me and when I contradict myself and get caught in a lie, it’s because you’re a Liberal.

I’ve said it several times now, if my daughter had been one of his “dates” His last appearance in the news would have been his obituary.

I’m sure Roy Moore is whispering to himself right now:

“Sentio aliquos togatos contra me conspirare.”

I would be astonished if Roy Moore spoke Latin but I take your point. No doubt he is convinced it’s a huge conspiracy, as are his twisted, redneck followers.
