Living in a Cult Called Alabama

Former Alabama Chief Justice and U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore waits to speak at Vestavia campaign rally.

I’ve recently been watching documentary programs on various cults and I’ve reached the inescapable conclusion that living in the State of Alabama is like being part of a cult. Trying to wrap my head around decisions make by the people who vote in this state [and who they vote for] usually gives me headaches.

The inability to decide on a moral compass by the Alabama voters is beyond explanation. I don’t even have to go back to the bad old days of the civil rights movement as we can just look at the past few years, leaving one with that WTF feeling. First let’s just jump back to this past summer and our Bible banging Governor Robert Bentley.

Apparently Governor Bentley developed an overly zealous fondness for his aide Rebekah Mason. This all started coming to light during the summer of of 2016. Several of the phone calls between he and Mrs. Mason had been caught on tape and were used by  his wife to file for divorce.. Apparently, according to sources, it was something close to phone sex or at least what folks in Alabama would call phone sex. But that was just the start because he tried to get the Director of Public Safety to cover  for him which said Director, Spencer Collins, would not do,  so the good guv fired him.

One thing people who screw around need to understand is that before you fire someone you really should know if they have got you by the short hairs or not because that dog turned around and bit him viciously. Collins had in his possession a couple of the tapes of the, uh, conversations between the governor and Rebekah. He also had some documentation of expenses that were not exactly legitimate the governor had used from the state’s treasury. So the brown stuff started hitting the fan shortly after that.

Bentley tried to play hardball and refused to resign so the legislature began compiling information for impeachment. The public in this state was going crazy about the salacious manner of the former deacon of his Baptist church. I was waiting for a scene out of a Frankenstein movie where the villagers are marching toward the mansion with torches and pitchforks to slay this monster.

I was upset but not because of his behavior on this particular issue, but because the year before the legislature had suddenly discovered that the state had made a $200 million dollar error in their efforts to balance the state budget. How the hell do you let a $200 million dollar shortfall just sneak up on you like a black cat at midnight? I mean, WTF?

Around August of this year he finally resigned from office and our Lt. Governor Kay Ivy took over. How competent is she? Who knows? She said on national television that she believed the stories that the women were telling about Roy Moore, but she is still going to vote for him because he is a Republican. The point here was that Bentley was never caught with his hand in the cookie jar, so to speak, but the good people of good moral character in Alabama skewered Bentley and roasted him over an open flame.

Now this is not the end of the latest adventures in the Alabama version of Peyton Place. In 2014 the Speaker of the Alabama House was indicted on 23 felony counts of corruption. He was finally convicted on 12 of those counts. All the way through the trial he was saying, (all together now) “This is just a political witch hunt.”  Of course it was. Now the people of Alabama were a little upset but there was no fire and nor were pitchforks being brought out. This was just Alabama politics au natural.

So now, we arrive at the bench of one Judge Roy Moore who had been chastised before for forcing people in his court room to pray with him before each court session while a circuit court judge. But, his first big bang at the party came in 2003 when he installed a great big rock with the Ten Commandments inscribed on it in rotunda of the Supreme Court building in Montgomery. When the U.S. Supreme Court ordered him to remove it he refused. So, the Alabama Judicial Committee suspended him from office. Then in 2014 he was elected by the same idiots to the same office and when the courts approved gay marriages he sent out a notice to all Judges of Probate saying that they were not to issue marriage licenses to any gay couple. Once again, he was suspended from his office.

After a couple unsuccessful runs for governor he has now set his sites on the United States Senate. What is interesting about his political career is that the people in Alabama let most of his past slide as long as he kept it in the cult, uh, I mean state.  But, stepping out on the national stage, well, that’s a little different. In some of these backwoods places one might marry their first cousin but they keep that information contained to just that town or county.

So these ladies start stepping up and standing up to old Roy. They do not want his shenanigans turned loose on the whole country. Of course, Roy and his minions are going to say (all together now) “This is a political witch hunt.” Well, I am sorry but the information is coming from too many different sources and is too specific and it is not just from the women who were girls at the time.

One of his former coworkers in the District Attorney’s office said it was common knowledge that Roy liked very young girls and pursued them. Another one is a former police officer from Gadsden, who just recently said that they had to watch out for the high school cheerleaders because Roy Moore would come to the football and basketball games and hit on them.. She also said that Moore was, in fact, banned from a now closed mall in Gadsden because he would troll the mall for young girls.

He denies this, of course, but I believe these women. I have been around the Criminal Justice System long enough to recognize certain types of behaviors. Pedophilia is one of those behaviors. It would be one thing if it was just a group of random women who came out and made accusations about Roy Moore. But it wasn’t.  It was a very specific type. All of these women say that it occurred during their teenage years. To a man of some importance in a city the size of Gadsden in the 1970s and 80s his attention to these girls would have been attractive. It would also be intimidating and the thought of telling someone about him would be frightening. He was an important powerful man then.

Looking at what we do know from his own words: he would never date any girl without her mother’s permission. Whoa dude. At 32 years of age you should be dating women who do not have to ask their mother’s permission. He first “noticed” his wife when she was 15 and in some type of dance company. I believe he is 15 years older than she. So he first noticed her when he was 30 and she was 15.  I think he said that he ran into her again several years later and they started dating and got married when she was about 22.

His profile, based on the number of women and the consistency in their ages and stories. along with some of the things he has personally said just screams “Pedophile” to me.  Has he continued along this path, I don’t know. He may have satisfied his thirst with his wife. He may have been reading too many Biblical stories about older men taking girls as wives in 2000 B C.  Whatever the case may be, I would not let him within a mile of my grandaughters.

But, I will guarantee one thing, the people who crucified Robert Bentley for allegedly having an affair with a grown woman will step up and vote for Roy Moore. He is a member of cult here in Alabama where as long as you beat your Bible hard enough the people will follow you. Warren Jeffs has nothing on ol Roy. He is cut from the same cloth as Donald Trump. The only good thing that can happen is for the two of them to bump heads. Both think they can do no wrong. Trump thinks his money and personality can overcome anything and Roy thinks he sits at the right hand of his God. In my humble opinion, neither one are worth the powder it would take to blow their brains out.

What worse is we have entire counties of people who still support this type of hypocritical behavior and even promote it. Cullman, Blount, and Morgan counties for instance had a lot of people voting for Roy Moore despite what a predator he is. Living in Alabama is very much like a cult…a cult in which is hard to escape for me. A cult that accept no other views and is full of WASPS.

The literal anus of America can be found in north Alabama.

Thank you for sharing that story Bill!! I have been losing my mind over all the nay sayers, especially women who admit to being victimized as a youth and never reporting it! It blows my mind that women can be so brainwashed by trauma!

What is scary about him and his asked the mom deal, did he purposely go looking for single moms like his wife that had daughters or what? That is some predatory shit right there.
