This Englishman Says Merry Christmas to Spite the Liberals

Read Time:2 Minute, 13 Second

by Neil Bamforth

It’s come to something when the term ‘Merry Christmas’ is now frowned upon, often by supposedly liberal people, as a somehow divisive non-inclusive term. The term that springs to my mind – for these supposedly liberal people – is ‘get a life’.

I have always wished friends, neighbour’s and workmates a ‘Merry Christmas’ regardless of their faith or culture.

In fact, if I’d suddenly started saying ‘Happy Holiday’ to any of them I suspect they would have booked me into a shrink.

I am, of course, fully aware that some of the people I know do not celebrate Christmas. Mind you, I don’t as a religious festival.

Most of our Christmas decorations are up – just the tree to get – and, on the sideboard there is a traditional baby Jesus three wise men thing going on.

It’s a nod to the wifey being a bit religionified. Quite why she married this heathen is a mystery to most.

She isn’t best pleased when I refer to this crib scene as ‘The Jesus and Mary Chain’.

Still, it’s all part of the Christmas spirit whether vodka, gin, scotch or your preference.

Also part of the Christmas spirit is wishing people a ‘Merry Christmas’.

Whether these people celebrate Christmas religiously or, as in my case, religiously alcoholically or they don’t celebrate Christmas at all it is immaterial.

If you feel offended by someone wishing you a Merry Christmas then may I suggest you spend this festive season in Iran or North Korea or some other country were it is unlikely you will receive such a wish.

In Britain, as in most western democracies, people will say ‘Merry Christmas’ and will continue saying such regardless and irrespective of the strange character’s who keep telling us it’s offensive and excludes some.

If anyone finds it offensive we don’t care.

If anyone feels excluded by it we don’t care.

A football (soccer) club over here called Millwall long ago rightly acquired a very bad hooligan reputation.

In honor of this reputation their fans today sing – to the tune of Rod Stewart’s “Sailing” – ‘No one likes us, no one likes us, no one like us, we don’t care”.

Slightly bizarre that political correctness could result in all the lovely people wishing their fellow humans a “Merry Christmas” could find themselves singing along with the most feared firm of football hooligans in history.

Well done you politically correct out there.

And I would love to take this opportunity to wish every human being and every other creature a Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

“No one likes me, no one likes me, no one likes me, I don’t care” 🎅😘

Aye aye Neal. despite of my comment, I am sorry if I may have appeared to trash your article. Not in the least! Actually I generally like everything you write because you are so damn funny and in a refreshing way controversial, not to say obstinate. Love it! I especially loved your ‘Jesus and Mary Chain’ reference.:) Happy holidays, good times and a great new year.

Must be pretty bad if you have to resort to such extreme measures. Make sure to pick the right fairy or mischief will be happening. Oh yea, about rephrasing that, nah, don’t think you should. I am good with it. 🙂

Yeah. Me too, then again I’m good with a lot of things. I think. Nah. Maybe not.

Incidentally. Is that two or three times someone has thrown the word spite at me?

The word doesn’t occur in the article, I feel no spite for anyone and the header isn’t mine.

So ner ner ne ner ner 😛

I hesitate to add my reply with all the other replies. Anyone who reads this far must have a chip on his shoulder, but I want to affirm that in all my years – and that’s a lot of them – no one has ever told me not to say Merry christmas. Yep, I’m one of those Liberals and I would remind all that tolerance is a liberal virtue. I’m sure most of us have the social skills to know when to say what and to whom and as someone who is absolutely god-free you can wish me a happy anything.

It’s an invented controversy started by ultra-right TV and Radio presenters who would, if there were one, cause most retributive Gods, to warm up their smiting apparatus.

I can’t speak for the USA but in Blighty we’ve had the odd politician pop up from our ‘left’ telling us ‘merry Christmas’ isn’t inclusive and all that tosh.

There’s a few well balanced people I know…they’d have to be….they’ve a chip on each shoulder 😀

Mr. Bamforth, you are most disrespectful to liberals in this country. You write a post to ‘spite’ them and tell them to ‘get a life.’ All the merry Christmas BS has been fabricated to encourage division in our society, something liberals spend a lot of time fighting against, mainly by living a better life and trying to be a better person as an example to the bigots out there. You are telling the wrong people to ‘get a life.’

Hello Bobbie and how are we today? A wee bit stressy I see.

I have disrespected liberals in America by complaining about some supposed liberals in Britain?……nope….you’ve lost me there…

If all these silly people have to moan about. – over here I’m not saying over there – is somebody being nice to them then yes, get a life seems a reasonable response to me.

Still, that’s just my point of view. Am I not allowed a point of view?

No offence! Just asking 😛

Never once had anyone instruct me in how to greet someone at Christmas. Not once, and I’ve been around a long time 🙂

Same here. Never said anything about instructions.

A few of our louder more extreme left pop up in Blighty every year and tell us how awful we are.

That’s all old bean.

No fan of the holidays in any case but a person should be able to wish another well without judgement or interference.

I am a hardcore Atheist and a very lefty liberal. I have a lot of friends from all walks of life and nobody, not one of them, ever made an issue out of this thing, whether to wish a happy holidays versus a Merry Christmas. I myself don’t give a flying fuck what wording people use to wish me a good time on December 25. I suspect that this controversy has been blown up by the media and it’s really out of control. Merry Christmas/ happy holidays folks.

I’m an atheist Britta and I don’t give a flying fuck what anyone calls it either. Most of my friends are atheists and they don’t care either. Never came up.

No one is saying it’s frowned upon at all Neil, other than the idiots at places like fox News and right wing think tanks, where do you come up with this stuff? As far as, if you feel offended go to(insert whatever bad place here) FUCK NO, no one gets to tell anyone else if you don’t like it then move. We should all be able to go about our lives doing what we want, with no judgey mcjudgertons telling us we need to act differently because they said so, so just deal with it or you will be excluded. I find it offensive that wars are fought with no end in sight, I find it offensive that kids go to bed hungry, I also find it offensive that there are some in this world do not have safe places to go about their lives. THOSE are offensive things.

Lots of people over here are frowning on it. To be honest I just ignore em and do my thing. Only mentioned it in passing to see what others thought.

Spot on too Jess. More important things on the planet.

Just me being an irascible old git 🎅😀

Who really cares? Do you really care Neil or do you just say it “spite the liberals?” LOL. That’s how I take it old man.

I never said anything about spiting anyone – you’ll have to ask our editor about that. Wasn’t my title.

Thing is, I’m cool with happy holidays, it’s just those trying to make me feel bad for saying ‘Christmas’ get my goat.
