An Englishman Asks If There Is Anything Positive About Donald Trump

Read Time:2 Minute, 17 Second

by Neil Bamforth

I am on dangerous ground here, I suspect, even asking the question ‘Are there any Trump positives?’ I also suspect my ground will metaphorically explode around me when I have the audacity to say “Yes, there are some positive things about Trump”

Before I go on, I am not a fan of the man. Defending his Tweets, in particular, the language he sometimes uses is nye on impossible.

In fact, defending the man is nye on impossible so, how can there be any positives?

Well, I admit, I am deeply suspicious of the Democrats regarding America closing down due to a lack of budgetary agreement.

Of course, I don’t know any more than anyone does but – only 10 Democrats were needed to pass the budget – a budget with a cross-party agreement and yet they blocked it. Why?

Could it be they wanted to make sure Trump would be embarrassed and blamed? If so then the Democrats have put political gain ahead of the American people.

I may be wrong of course, but remember, Democrats are politicians too. Never trust politicians.

Now, are there any Trump positives? Well, yes. Quite probably significantly outweighed by negatives but, nevertheless, there are some.

Trump was not a part of politics yet he decided he wanted to be President.

I can’t recall anyone in a western democracy ever making such a decision not already heavily involved in politics and succeeding. It is a quite extraordinary achievement.

It has to be said that under Obama’s Presidency – a man I genuinely like and admire – many rogue nations pushed harder than they had dared before. China, North Korea, and Iran being just three.

Since ‘shoot from the lip’ Trump arrived all three of these unpleasant nations have clearly reigned themselves in.

No! Of course, I’m not condoning an American President tweeting that ‘my button is bigger than your button’. It’s absurd and, I’m certain, embarrassing for Americans – but guess what?

It worked.

North Korea is suddenly actively talking peacefully to South Korea.

Economic growth in America has hit 3% now whilst economists had predicted it would be 2020 before this happened.

Unemployment has actually fallen.

These are positive things and cannot be denied as such and they have happened since Trump’s election.

So, you see? It is possible to find positives in Trump.

Besides, I had to focus on the positives. Focussing on the negatives would have required several volumes of rather large books if the media is to be believed.

No. I don’t like him. No, I wouldn’t vote for him but, yes, I can see through the fog and pick out positives when they exist.

Dislike but don’t hate.

Hate is blind to the truth. Even unpalatable truth.

I’ve lost count of the times Mr Bamforth has contradicted himself on this current thread. The racist with black friends, the anti Semite with Jewish friends, the hard core conservative who is a union rep kind of contradictions. If you would only fly your true colors I’d have more respect, this running with the hare and the hounds is nonsense.

They did not block it at all, 4 goopers voted against this lest we all forget and 5 dems voted for it. There was a bi partisan agreement he went back on, where it would have passed with all manner of dem votes. Republicans own the whole government lock stock and two smoking barrels, so they need to learn how to govern by consensus. that they don’t is on them.

None of that appeared on our news hence I had no idea.

At least YOU get it and explain.

You only jump down my throat when I deserve it 😘

Mind you….It’s fun when they do eh? 😀

Neil, Neil, Neil. You obviously have access to these here internet things so you could look for news all over the place instead of relying on right leaning sites where it’s all dems this dems that and dems the other. Oh you know me, I’ll jump your shit on a second’s notice when I think you deserve it. Well some people*** get their shit jumped on, just because it pleases me to do so, so there is that 🙂

To be honest no. I might think the Beeb are a bit biased to the left sometimes but I still trust them – well more than I trust the internet anyway.

The Democrats are using the only tool available to them to protect those young people affected by DACA. Trump is literally the epitome of the greedy American who tramps and stamps all over the world giving the the people a bad name in other countries by ignoring the cultures of others. His disdain for any country other than America is apparent and his loathing of their people is clear as well. He completely dislikes people of different color despite the fact that they have made numerous contributions to America. He is a petulant school yard bully who turns his nose up around others as if to say they are all peons in comparison to the United States with the exception of Russia. He is everything I have always hated since I was old enough to know how to dislike someone. No, he has not accomplished one positive thing since he took office.

Well he did say he would run the country like he did his businesses, so he bankrupted what 4 of them, so he’s well on his way but this time it’s with your and my taxpayer money.

Incidentally, out of curiosity, why did the Democrats not agree the budget for public services?

Reply to  Neil Bamforth

What? Public services such as what? Secondly, the Democrats don’t have a choice as to what to agree to and what not to agree to. That’s not how it’s done.

Neil Bamforth
Reply to  Professor Mike

I’m using terminology from the BBC.

The news is saying there was cross party agreement regarding funding for whatever public services are called over there. Parks, museums etc.

The Democrats blocked it? You tell me!

Reply to  Neil Bamforth

You would have to define public services. I’ve not read or heard that over here.

jess
Reply to  Neil Bamforth

WHAT public service. Schumer went in there with all manner of things to placate the big orange man baby and he still was not satisfied. Now he’s trying to blame everyone but himself where 4 years ago he blamed Obama for the shutdown that, once again, goopers caused. Fuck him and the horse he rode in on.

Neil is a conservative, a hard right winger, who doesn’t like Democrats, therefore he’s blaming our Democrats for the problems.

I met a woman and her husband yesterday in the city, at the woman’s march. Both republicans and both disgusted with the way he is leading the country. I reminded them he is not any kind of leader he just happens to be the rep that is repping us right now in the halls of power, we are his bosses not the other way around although he thinks he is the boss of everyone. They guy was more conservative than the wife but I ignored that part just because he was out there supporting his wife and the many women around him. I ditched them with my aunts, after about a half mile because he started in on Ivanka being a good choice for the first female prez. THAT I could not stomach at all.

What I am saying is, the right leaning sites are writing/reporting this a specific way to placate the rubes among us, lying about who is to blame and lying by omission. You are not getting the full accounting of anything. Look at The Guardian BBC Worldwide, CNN International, al jazeera etc, if you want a fair accounting of what is going on and don’t rely on The Sun, Daily mail, Fox news etc.

Soz…the ‘uh?’ Was to Mike. I’m not a hard right winger??

I can be conservative with a small ‘c’ but I can be remarkably liberal and left wing too – environment, animal rights, equality etc…..

Why”s it always ‘you’re this’ or ‘you’re that’?…..bugs me

Nothing Trump has done could have any direct connection to the the market rally or any other economic development because nothing has yet taken effect. It’s the expectation of a bump in corporate profits holding up the rally which actually began right after Obama took office reversing the Bush debacle. It’s the second longest market rally so far and maybe better than that at this point.

The same goes with employment which is a trailing indicator. In terms of job growth Obama’s economy was the impetus. 7 years of steady growth after 8 years of steady loss. Job growth under Trump has waned.

Trump wants you to look at current figures because it’s easier to lie and because the graphs over the last ten years tell the entire story. He’s just trying to take credit for what the Democrats did, and BTW the economy has done better under Democrats since the end of WWII.

The stock market is not the economy by any means.

I must admit, as I typed, I thought ‘really?’….somethings better under Trump?

Must admit it did seem odd.

Ad to North Korea. I do actually think he’s frightened them….let’s face it, he frightens us!

Maybe, re North Korea and Iran, Obama was too diplomatic?

Not intended as a real criticism….I thought – and think – I’d love a leader like him in Blighty.

He made “W” Bush and Jimmy Carter look like good presidents.
