Norway Bans Fur Farming

Read Time:18 Second

Norway introduced a total ban on fur farming Sunday, a statement by the Norwegian animal rights organization NOAH said. Norway has nearly 300 fur farms, which produce fur from 700,000 minks and 110,000 foxes every year, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) added. I once came upon a large rat snake killing a young rabbit in my back yard. I was disgusted and horrified but it was too late to save the bunny. Still I refrained from “punishing” the snake even though as a mammal whose instincts made me want to protect the furry little thing I wanted to see the snake as evil and kill it. It wasn’t. Nature is unfeeling and indifferent and life is indistinguishable from pain and suffering and disease and starvation and death.

I do sympathize and I really do care very much about humane treatment of animals, but I wonder when someone will trap and poison rats but cry for a mink. Our affection varies a lot. We feel worse about slaughtering a horse for meat than a cow. I can’t eat a rabbit or a lamb, but they are prey animals that have been eaten for tens of millions of years before we showed up. Indeed those species would die out without predation.

People will throw paint on your chinchilla coat but not on McDonalds golden arches or your leather shoes or belt or book bindings in the library. Isn’t our constitution written on leather? I just recognize the contradictions inherent in our emotions. We will swat a mosquito but not a butterfly. We can’t stop killing unless we stop living.

I’m not faulting you or anyone or myself either. I’d shoot someone for harming a puppy and I’d like to shut down factory farms for good, but we did not invent the food chain and without it most life on earth would end. We cannot create the paradise we dream of.

Good. Us lefty, left, leftist animal lovers are rejoicing about this news. I would rather be naked than wear fur, when there is so much faux fur around that could be worn and looks just as good. My mom had different thoughts on the fur subject than I did, sad to say. Not to worry, all her furs I inherited were sold at auction and every single penny I got was donated to 3 different animal charities in her name. Both her sisters gave me much grief about that decision but I told them to go pound sand, they were mine to do with what I chose and I chose to use them for good in the world.

Good for you Jess. I go to a lot of estate sales and it’s astonishing to see how many furs are for sale, in some case, two or three dozen hanging in a closet. Makes me sad.
