Rabid Anti-Pot Activist Jeff Sessions Mounting Attack Against State Marijuana Laws
Donald Trump’s erstwhile Attorney General and rabid anti-marijuana activist, Jeff Sessions is going after legalized pot.
Sessions is a guy whose passion is eliminating the “devil weed” from American society, despite the fact that millions of people disagree with him, and expressed their convictions at the ballot box. Remember, this is the Alabama lawmaker who once said pot dealers should be executed.
Two brave folks with direct knowledge of the decision claim Sessions plans to rescind a policy that had let legalized marijuana flourish without federal intervention across the country.
They spoke on condition of anonymity and were not allowed to publicly discuss it before Thursday’s announcement. The move leaves it up to US attorneys in states where pot is legal to decide whether to aggressively enforce federal marijuana law.
This nonsense from the Trump administration’s top cop will no doubt add more confusion about whether it’s OK to grow, buy, or use marijuana in states where it’s legal. Like most things done in the Trump administration, it’s a step backward, not forward.
Marijuana Moment provides background and a timeline:
The 2013 “Cole Memo” gives states a sort of playbook on how to enact their own marijuana laws without federal intervention, by detailing criteria on things like driving while high and interstate trafficking.
In April, a Justice Department task force was instructed by Sessions to review the memo and offer any suggestions on policy changes. In November, Sessions confirmed the memo remained in effect in comments to Congress, but did reference the DOJ review.
This wrong-headed decision comes days after California began selling recreational marijuana. Sessions compares marijuana to heroin and blames it for spikes in violence, even though there is absolutely zero evidence to support this wrong-headed claim.
Twenty-nine states and the District of Columbia currently have laws broadly legalizing marijuana in some form.
Final rules for recently-passed medical marijuana laws are pending in Arkansas, Florida and North Dakota, and yet Sessions wants to dismantle these rules and, using antiquated and nonsensical federal law which still lists marijuana as a Schedule 1 controlled substance.
When will America wake up? When will the people take to the streets, waving proverbial pitchforks and holding signs aloft, decrying this dangerous, crooked administration? What will it take? Does anyone know, or, when we finally do, will it be too late? Let’s hope not.
In the meantime, light up, lean back, and enjoy, while you still can, and make sure you have plenty of snacks on hand.
Smoked it once and immediately fell asleep.
Kept it in mind if I ever suffer from insomnia 😀
Well damn, where oh where will we weed smokers get our stuff if this comes to pass. I may test the theory soon, of sparking one up in front of law enforcement, to see what they would do now that it is legal here.
Also too. Don’t know about the rest of you that may smoke but not once have I ever lit one up and thought, hey I know, I should go on a serial killing rampage. If I am high enough, I can barely make it to the kitchen from my family room, so violent rampages are not on the agenda.
I’m a guy who likes to smoke pot from time to time, but, of course not these days, because I moved to a state where it’s not yet legal, and I would never, ever do anything that was illegal. No ma’am, not me. Uh uh! Nope.
Yeah and you a collij perfessor with students, where oh where would you ever get information on how to get it.
