When Political Correctness Is Tyranny With Manners

Read Time:2 Minute, 6 Second

Political correctness is skewing actual correctness in America.  In an unbridled effort to treat minorities fairly, we may be treating the majority unfairly.  You decide.

by Michael John Scott

I watched the Golden Globes last night and was puzzled by some of the outrages. Let’s try to understand:

If several men do a better job of directing movies than several women in the same category, should those men be ignored because women have to be recognized, even if they haven’t done as well as the men?

Inversely, if several women do a better job of directing movies than several men in the same category should those women be ignored because men also have to be recognized, even though the women did a better job?

This craziness has just gone way too far. Whoever does the best job, man, woman, white, black, yellow, brown and etc., should get the fucking award. It shouldn’t be decided by the politically correct craziness of the day.

I don’t deny that the world is full of prejudice, discrimination, and hate.  Of course, it is, and steps have to be taken to correct these deficiencies, but not at the expense or sacrifice of others.

In 2016, following the Oscars, a great shout went up from the far Left, decrying the fact that fewer men and women of color received awards than white men and women.  Well, could it have anything to do with the fact there are fewer black actors, based on the population?

Naturally, no one bothered to mention that, because, to do so, branded one as a racist, as no doubt I will be branded for writing this very post.  If we are going to deal intelligently with the lack of diversity, we need to take into consideration the factual applications, as opposed to the emotional judgments.

For example, blacks make up 13.3% of the population, and 12.5% is Hispanic.  So, unless Hollywood attracts a hugely disproportionate number of people of color, it makes no sense to insist that black actors receive as many awards as white actors when there aren’t nearly as many.  This, in my humble opinion, is just called common sense, a trait that seems to have gone the way of unbridled political correctness.

In a speech at the Harvard Law School in 1999, the late Charlton Heston, a man whose politics I don’t always admire, said: “political correctness is tyranny with manners.”  In this case, he couldn’t have been more ‘correct.’

Perhaps if we had all lived their histories we might better understand the problems. Maybe we might change this to Polite Correctness.

So Brexit and the pitiful negotiations are not having a detrimental effect on English life? My financial adviser told me one of the reasons the US stock market is doing so well is that a of London money is running for cover and getting away from an unstable financial situation. How does the hard left figure into that equation. They have no power in parliament, how are they closing down free speech, they barely have a voice. Just like democrats here.

Don’t believe everything you read 😉

Nobody is certain of the future. For every ‘expert’s saying “doom!” There’s one saying the opposite.

No idea how it’ll end myself.

Nowt to do with ‘left’ or ‘right’s though.

Brexit was a free vote so irrelevant to left or right. It was what it was.

All over Britain university’s, for example, are being taken over on campus by hard left students stifling freedom of speech and open debate.

The hard left are as dangerous as the far right. Extremes always are dangerous.

Incidentally, I never mentioned Brexit in connection with the left. No idea why you did….

I read between the lines Mr Bamforth.

So, these hard left students that stifle free speech, are they complaining about Nazis giving a speech the Student Union?

Don’t be silly. I doubt any students – or anyone else with sense come to that – would want Nazis speaking anywhere.

Actually we’re cracking down on the far right over here since the Jo Cox murder.

I said extremes are dangerous. Left or right.

As for reading between lines. Unless you’ve actually met someone that’s nye on impossible.

I don’t know you and visa versa.

I have to take what you write at face value as a result.

If you ever meet me between the lines is all yours….if I survive it 😀

One of the great political fights being fought today is for control of language. The Right is winning.

In the States I’m inclined to agree with you. Trump and his followers are a worry worldwide.

In Britain, however, we are having more difficulties with the hard left trying to close down freedom of speech.

Same fight, different enemy…

I’d respond to several more comments but I don’t know who is talking to whom. Might say something politically incorrect to the wrong person.

People should be rewarded for talent and ability alone and, of course, they often aren’t.

It is true that women and ethnic minorities are often overlooked.

This is wrong.

It is also wrong to reward someone simply for being from an ethnic minority for example. That is political correctness.

It is wrong.

Just thought I’d point out Mr. Bamforth, the above comments contradict each other. Don’t bother to thank me, consider it a public service.

I just wish we could find a better name, because the problem isn’t correctness, but being forced to adhere to arbitrary authority that rarely originates in whatever group is supposed to be protected. Rather it’s self-appointed authority we’re conditioned to accept automatically. I mean they’re black or they’re female or they’re Holy Rollers and so how can they be wrong to any degree? How can it be racist if the racist is black?

I mean anyone who diverges from the line is lost and cannot be redeemed in a culture where saying “I’m not racist” is proof positive that you are and any offering of fact only confirms it. We have such a knee-jerk reaction to anything demanded by some organization, some professor, some teen age loudmouth that a man can be condemned as a racist for calling someone else “the smartest man in the orient.” Say Asiatic art, say orientalist art – you’re lost forever and you can never work your way out of the mortal sin. Spent your entire life fighting something? Don’t make me laugh, you racist, misogynist, Chauvinist pig you.

I read the craziness that is political correctness has gone too far. I tend to think the criticism of so called political correctness has gone too far. I can understand the women of Hollywood wanting recognition, opportunity and equal pay for doing the same job as men. As far as I am concerned let the nicely paid Hollywood types fight it out for who wins and who gets credit. Pay in Hollywood usually reflects what previous films have earned for the producers and usually the best earning films are not the best films, in an artistic sense. For example Darkest Hour will earn a lot less than any Star Wars movie. I know which of the two I’d rather see.

I really don’t like the term political correctness, but if it stops people of color, people who speak Spanish or any other non-English language, being called foul and abusive names, I’m all for it.

I’m for the same thing – political correctness actually turns people the other way.

Darkest Hour is superb.

I could be mistaken but I don’t think Michael Scott was talking about people being called names. I expect he was talking about opportunities seized by all but rewarded to minorities not because of their accomplishments but because of their race, creed, gender or colour.

It’s politically correct to use African American instead of the N word. You can’t pick and choose what part of politically correct you like. Let’s be honest, women and minorities have been shit on for years, it’s pathetic there has to be legislation to encourage diversity in the workplace but if that’s what it takes. The poor oppressed white majority need a kick up the backside.

Why have you ignored Shirley’s valid point?

What you said is also valid but you’ve ignored what Shirley said.

I wonder why?

Neil Bamforth

Wholeheartedly agree with a nod to Caroline’s valid point.

I’ve fought political correctness for years and, as a result, been regularly called racist, xenophobic and many other things.

Couldn’t care less.

Political correctness is a scourge on our world and needs wiping out.

Cracking article old bean.

Mind you, now I’ve said I like it you’re doomed 😀

I agree with what you say Mike, however, I do think women may be given short shrift, and I use population figures as well to justify my conclusion. According to the Census Bureau:

The number of females in the United States according to the 2010 Census is 157.0 million. The number of males was 151.8 million. At 85 and older, there were more than twice as many women as men.

So, with those figures things should be about even, but I don’t see that as always the case. I do, however, think your article was fair, and you made some good points.

Lyndon Probus

Mike, your conclusions are well stated and certainly accurate. In today’s academy, the truth is an invention. Expecting people to show up on time is racist. Censorship is good. Silencing opposing viewpoints imperative. Violence to enforce safety is natural.

For the last 25 years, under the guise of “political correctness,” we’ve been watching the inexplicable flow into our culture. The idiotic demands of political correctness in the 1980s, ironically relying on the decency of the American people for their acquiescence, was just the prep course, an amuse bouche before the main course of creating social chaos and destruction.

It is all rather unfortunate, but instead of seeing an evolution of the culture we are seeing the de-evolution, and that serves no one.

I had to tune it out last night. It was way over the top and do not get me started on the Oprah for president, because she made a pretty speech thing.
