Will Republicans Ever Stand Up to a Racist Trump?
Let’s face it. The president of the United States, the so-called leader of the free world, is a racist.
Now, I don’t mean he’s just racially insensitive, and not just a populist demagogue snuggling up to his blue-collar base.
Donald J. Trump is a bigot. We’re talking straight-up, go-back-to-where-you-came-from bigotry. You know the kind that emboldened Southern segregationists to barricade college classrooms and train firehoses on civil rights demonstrators more than half a century ago?
This, however, is 2018. The Chinese Year of the Rat and the nutter making like your drunk uncle in high dudgeon is the leader of the free world.
The fact is, not one person who has who has paid even casual attention to Mr. Trump could claim anything like real surprise when he told a bipartisan congressional delegation that he was tired of immigrants from “shithole countries” such as El Salvador, Haiti, and some African nations and longed for more from countries like Norway. Norway! Let that soak in.
Is there any doubt about what this guy means when he talks about merit-based immigration?
Trump could not have been clearer about who is welcome in his America and who is not.
In a Friday morning tweet, the occupant of the Oval Office offered a weak denial, saying he just used “tough” language, but had never said “shitstorm.” But there’s no denying that the words multiple news organizations reported Trump said are consistent with comments he has made about race during his campaign and his presidency.
It’s worth noting that these comments came just one day before the eighth anniversary of the devastating Haiti earthquake that led the U.S. to offer protected status to nearly 60,000 Haitians.
In addition, it was the week before the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day Trump went through the motions to honor; his words ringing false with every syllable, as his vice-president looked on with that kindly expression.
But no matter what he says on Monday, we’ll know how he really feels, because we’ve seen him speak from the heart before:
It was June 2015 when he called Mexican immigrants rapists.
And it was in December of that year when he called for a travel ban barring all Muslim travelers from the U.S.
Who could forget August 2017, when he recognized “very fine people,” among the white supremacists who incited chaos and violence in Charlottesville.
Republicans of conscience will call Trump’s most recent comments appalling and ignorant. Repugnant and vile. Hateful and disturbing.
So what comes next? Experience suggests the party’s censure will be fleeting, and its reconciliation with its racist leader swift, because they need him to do their bidding.
The immigrants whose lives and children’s lives hang in the balance, however, will not soon forget. Neither should voters, who will, in a few short months, have the certain opportunity to hold apologists accountable for the president’s cruel and unvarnished bigotry.
Even now a couple of Republicans who were in that meeting denied hearing Trump say “shithole.”
Believe it or not the U.S. as a whole is more Democratic Neil. Republicans are just better at gerrymandering maps so Congress and the Electoral College that actually elects the President can rule with less than a majority.
The other response to you is Obama was as good a President as any during my lifetime. The only reasons to dislike him is because one is either incredibly stupid and close minded, or a bigot.
Is the problem that America is more Republican than Democrat?
No idea…just asking.
Inquiring mind n all that….
No. Not necessarily, although the government is Republican at the moment, primarily because of the millions who turned out to vote for the Big Pig last year, and those who hated Obama so much they refused to vote or simply voted Republican. Elections go both ways like they do in the UK.
No idea how anyone could hate Obama. He wasn’t perfect – who is? – but he was, and is, quite obviously a very decent egg indeed.
One word answer girl. Nope.
Jess’ answer, they cannot afford to break away from him till they get all their horrible policies signed off, so till then he is their useful idiot.
That’s exactly it. Nothing else matters to these hypocritical fools. All of them. No exceptions. I thought Flake and Corker would start going after him, but other than the brief skirmish they are just as meek as the rest of them and they aren’t running again. WTF?
All of them, no matter how much they protest, believe in the same things he does mike. They are just quieter and more diplomatic about their bullshit. Look at Collins from Maine, supposed moderate my ass, she talks a good talk but ultimately falls right in line behind awful policy.
Collins is yet another HUGE disappointment in the long list of disappointments.
Non-Republicans are the most voting booth shy collection of people in the western world.
The worry is that even if the Dems sweep in and take either the House or Senate, the electorates memory is short. It only took two years for Obama to lose Congress. And Bush was the worst president in at least my lifetime if not history. Hopefully the Dems will figure out a way to get the apathetic to vote. Republicans are loyal to a fault. A few may switch party or stay home. But not enough to swing an election. I got my ideas but the DNC refuses to listen. Quite frankly, not many people on the left listen either. But I like commenting so what the heck.
Bush has been dethroned. Trump will go down in history as the worst president ever, at least until he’s displaced.
Few worry about punishment that isn’t swift and severe, and lawmakers aren’t concerned, yet, about November 2018 because it seems so far away, and a lot could happen. Morality isn’t the issue with these clowns, only a vague fear of retribution. As the day draws closer and the unfavorable polls keep mounting up they’ll start to get nervous. By then, hopefully, it will be too late.
Your Beccaria is showing Mark, except you forgot “certain.” 🙂
