If You Want to Control Guns Control the Money

God love all my left wing friends. It’s virtually unanimous they want gun control. They want semi-automatic weapons banned. Gun ownership regulated. Training. Background checks. Age limits. Mental evaluations. All wonderful ideas. But sadly they’re missing the real problem that’s causing this real problem.

It’s the freaking money stupid.

A Congressman has to raise 10 grand a week to fund re-election. A Senator even more. PACS have to raise into the millions of dollars to fund ads attacking or defending ads the other side runs. The Koch Brothers will spend more money in a year on candidates and issues they like than over 100 middle-class American families will in a year. Maybe 500 families. Who knows since thanks to the Citizens United ruling tons of money spent on campaign issues is not for public knowledge.

The NRA spent around 5 million last year. Senator Marco Rubio got close to ten grand of that in addition to the NRA money spent on ads promoting him or gun owner stuff. And well-meaning people that care about school kids being massacred think Rubio and anyone else on the receiving end of all this monetary support will be swayed by outraged and grieving children and parents will do anything but the bidding of the people and organizations that give them lots of money?

Being a good Republican, I fully support the Russian controlled “bots” infesting Twitter and Facebook and virtually every message board on every website that has a decent amount of traffic. Hell. On my old blog “Truth 101” I had at least 100 visits a day and multiple comments from different accounts that all shared the same IP address. Does make one wonder if the 3 million members the NRA claims are all real people. And since much of the NRA’s funding comes from gun manufacturers, dues are as low as $10 a year. Pretty cheap. Even if there are really 3 million members maybe 5 million people of good sense could come up with $10 apiece and take over the NRA. But that would be sneaky. And the folks that run the NRA would just come up with another club. The great irony is they would insist on a background check before awarding new memberships.

It comes down to money. So many members of Congress are bought and paid for. It’s not even a source of shame. It’s more a source of jealousy that Rubio got 10 grand and the republican in another state that votes with the NRA 100% of the time only got 9 grand. That’s a travesty.

Republicans have our billionaires and Democrats have theirs. My republican billionaires spend their campaign money wisely. They get guys that will unquestioningly do their bidding while Democrat billionaires waste their money on nonsense like climate change and improving schools. And fellas, none of that stuff will ever happen if my fellow Republicans (the billionaires that own them) in Congress stay in Congress.

My fellow Republicans have proven time and again that they are bought and paid for. That also means they are loyal to who pays for them. So maybe Bill Gates ought to think about that before leaving his money to charities that will at most put a band-aid on a problem and instead spend his billions on fixing Congress. Offer Rubio 100 grand and watch him change his tune on guns real quick. And if anyone thinks President Trump won’t quickly see the light if a fellow billionaire offers to foot the bill for him in 2020 I got a bridge to sell you.

It’s not easy getting people to fight for principles. By that, I mean getting them to spend money on principles. Pro-Life rallies are always well attended by people who I have no doubt care about the abortion issue. But it doesn’t cost them anything to go to a rally or parade and hold a sign and look sad. Some of them will put a few bucks in a hat if one is passed around. But Heaven forbid a donation that hurts them in the wallet.

Billionaires got plenty of money, They just got a big tax cut that will make no difference in how they live or spend. But they, like the rest of us, care about their self-interests. They’ll fork over plenty of cash. Let’s see if something like real campaign finance reform that removes money as a factor in politics by getting a Congress that will see to it and a President that will nominate Justices that will rule in favor freedom and good government over bribery.

You may say I’m a dreamer. Of course, that would offend me as a good republican since John Lennon was a dreamer and a weirdo by my good Republican thinking. But it would be nice, if not weird, to be able to think for my republican self rather than waiting for the next set of Koch Brother financed, Fox News talking point of the day telling me what to think. Think about it.

Never going to ban guns in the US no matter how many kids killed but this might be a turning point for some concessions from the NRA.

Truth 101 was a fine piece of the interweb and it’s comments among the most readable in blogdom.

OMG I remember that and I donated too, I think to a shelter in your state if memory serves me correctly. See now I am going to go look and see if I can find it before my friend decides she is going to wake up, grace me with her presence so we can travel to the city.

Ohhh memory lane, Truth 101 was a good blog and I enjoyed visiting it. All kinds of money needs to be taken out of politics not just the NRA money, but that’s a start imo.
