Why Britain Should Ban The Burka

Read Time:3 Minute, 17 Second

by Neil Bamforth

The Islamic ‘burka’, or full-face veil, is an increasingly common sight on the streets of Britain. The most extreme even have gauze over the slit their eyes peep out of. It is, not surprisingly, impossible to tell who is beneath the burka. As a couple of robberies recently showed, it can even be a man.

Now. In Islamic countries, this wearing of the burka is very common.

As often as not, the women wearing it are doing so by command of the men in their lives be it husband, brother or father.

In other words, it is denigrating women.

In Britain, it is often claimed Muslim women wear it through choice. If so then perhaps psychiatric assistance is required? What could possibly go through anyone’s mind that encourages them to walk around impersonating Harry Potter Death Eaters?

Well, it certainly isn’t a religious requirement. Only a headscarf is.

There are those who claim Britain is multi-cultural. There are those who will never accept such a thing. There is also a significant number, and I include myself here, who are not averse to a degree of multi-culturalism but are skeptical that we are anywhere near an acceptable amount in an acceptable way.

You see, in order for a country to be genuinely multi-cultural the first requirement is for the disparate cultures to respect each other. That has to be a given.

It is also essential that, for want of a better description, the ‘indigenous’ culture doesn’t feel threatened by the alien cultures now in their midst.

Britain is actually hugely successful in achieving this. Hindu’s, Sikh’s, Jews, African Caribbeans, Chinese and so forth are readily accepted, as is their culture and, indeed, faith by all sensible Brits. Yes, there are Brits who aren’t sensible but it isn’t a perfect world is it?

Read: Why Britain Must Ban Some Faith Schools

The culture/faith having the most difficulty in showing respect for any other is the Islamic one.

Yes! I know! Here he goes again Muslim bashing! Whatever. Look. If it was the Sikh’s or the Eastern Europeans showing a lack of respect then I wouldn’t be writing this about Islam I’d be writing it about Sikh’s or whoever. It just happens to be the case that Islam remains very problematical in Britain.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan shows that Muslims can not only assimilate whilst remaining true to their faith and culture, they can even rise to high political office. There are many more examples like Khan too. It is happening and can happen.

Unfortunately, there are still far too many examples of Muslim’s failing abysmally to show the required respect for other cultures – not just British but all the others here too.

If you discount the Islamic terrorist bit then the ‘flag bearer’ for showing a lack of respect for the people of Britain, whether white or black or brown, is the wearing of the burka, otherwise known as the full face veil.

Just like other cultures and faiths, many Muslims have chosen to settle in Britain. Fine. What many are still singularly failing to acknowledge is that Britain is a western country with western values. When we speak to someone we look at them. We read facial reactions. It is a part of being us.

The wearing of the full face veil whilst living in Britain is either denigrating to women – if they are forced – or completely lacking in respect for the country in which they live.

Should they not be entitled to wear what they like? You may well ask that.

Yes. We are a free society.

However, if they are forced to wear it they need to be freed from a culture denigrating them as women.

If they wear it by choice they are showing a distinct lack of respect for the society in which they reside.

Either way, it should, and must, be banned in law.

Well, now that this has devolved into a big piss about rodents and the Taliban I am sure my two cents are probably not worth even that but I will throw it out there anyway. We really haven’t had a big problem here in the US with those who wear burkas.I know a few Muslims but none that go to that extreme although many women wear hijabs and concealing clothing. I respect that this is their culture and their choice. This country is so large with so many metropolitan areas that we can absorb this type of extreme dress as it is spread out across a large area. But in a smaller country with only one really large metro area, I can see how greater numbers of women in burkas could become disturbing to a population accustomed to individual freedom. And there is truth to the fact that a burka is not required by Islamic teachings but some Islamic countries have made wearing the burka law. So, now we are down to immigration and why did they come to the UK (or US or Canada, etc) in the first place? People immigrate for a variety of reasons to be sure but the majority over the years have immigrated to find freedom and escape oppression, find a better way of life. So, if these women remain in their burkas and these men are openly hostile toward others – you have to wonder, what did they come to another country for? I am the daughter of immigrants. I know what it is like to live between 2 worlds, old and new and I watched my parents struggle to understand and adapt to American culture. We held on to many traditions and foods but we also adopted American traditions (like Thanksgiving & Fourth of July) and foods (like burgers and fries). We also learned to respect the law of the land in which we lived. And so, there must be some level of mutual respect and acceptance. We have Amish here and Hasidic Jews and others that dress and live differently from other Americans. Their religious roots are strong so they and their employers and neighbors adapt/ maybe make allowances for certain practices. Living in a melting pot like America where hardly anyone is truly “native” exposes us to all sorts of different cultures but problems arise when people who have been here generations forget where THEIR roots are and want to blame newer immigrants for their own ignorance, laziness and lack of ambition. They thrive on being able to push someone one else to the bottom of the barrel so they can feel superior to at least one group. And their desire to hate and punish is so misguided and irrational, we ended up with the Orange Blob in the White House. Our country is being destroyed from the inside out due to hate, greed, ignorance and intolerance. So, be careful what you wish for. Should the burka be outlawed or should we just concentrate on making sure other laws are enforced? If someone is harassing you on the street, call the cops because there are laws against that. If someone in a burka or a nun’s habit or a uniform is acting suspiciously, report it as suspicious activity. Hopefully, in time, newer immigrants will begin to feel more at ease and relax some of their more extreme dress and behavior, especially when they find out interfering in other people’s lives won’t be tolerated. They will adapt or go back where they came from. As others have pointed out, there are many styles of dress we may find offensive; saggy pants, backward hats, speedos – but do we have the right to outlaw them and then claim to be defenders of freedom? Slippery slope…

What one of us has the right to tell anyone else what to wear. If these women like wearing medieval, cover up everything clothes then let them. They are not hurting you or causing you to have bad days. Get on with your own damn lives and let us women wear what we choose to wear. Would I wear one, oh hell no I would not, but then some women would not like my choices in fashion either and I am good with that because I don’t dress for anyone else but myself.

I was talking about women being forced to wear the veil – wrong,…… and women choosing to wear it in the full knowledge westerners are uncomfortable seeing it on their streets in their country – wrong and lacking respect for the society in which they wish to live.

I get uncomfortable when I see wrinkly people on the beach, wearing bikinis or speedos but I am not about to get into the hissy fit mode about it. It also gets on my nerves when I see people wearing their pajamas outside but it’s their deal, they can do what they want and I can get through my day regardless. You can only control your own life, not another persons life.

Odd really. Bobbie and Cherries – of all people – seemingly ok with burka enslavement?

Ok with the total lack of respect for a western society shown by voluntarily wearing it?

So much for liberal credentials eh?

Really Mr. Bamforth, I call you out on your wild claims, and you say I’m ok with enslavement of women. How pathetic.

The burka subjugates women. Fact.

It should be outlawed in any civilized country.

Have you asked all the women that wear a burka, how they feel about wearing it? If not, you cannot say fact just because you want it to be. Would you say the same thing to a woman that wears a long sleeved high necked down to the ankles dress?
Ask any woman that had or still has to ride the monthly crimson tide if she would have loved to be just invisible like that and I can guarantee you many of us would say, oh hell yes, cover me up don’t look in my direction, don’t even breathe near me or I will end you.

Love the clever comments – especially the mouse one!

As usual the haters have to throw their comments in – personally I very rarely see anyone in a burka- to listen to N/N you’d think they outnumbered the women in the country!
Same old . . .

Open your eyes Cherries. Or maybe you support the Taliban? They like burkas don’t they?

No hate here. Just sympathy for women enslaved or annoyance at idiots.

“No hate here”, you just asked cherries if she supports the Taliban with zero evidence. Hate to tell you my man but that is some deep seated hate against people you don’t even know.

Respect is a two way street. Wearing the Burka whilst living in Britain – knowing, as they do we are uncomfortable with it – is a one way street to no respect for us – yet they expect respect themselves.

So will we be forcing nuns in full habits to give up their clothes too, if I am seeing this correctly? Or is it just women that follow the faith of Islam. Will it only be women affected by this rule being put forth, or will we include some of the priests in gowns with funny hats and those that follow Judaism with their long black coats coz let’s face it, they could go all Chester the Molester if the covering is long enough.

Oh they are really easy to use, seriously, so simple. Momz taught me a super easy way and I taught my niece and nephews the exact same way. Tie a rubber band at the top where you are supposed to separate them and stick a tiny piece of paper right at that same spot. It makes for easy handling and opening and closing them.

Hm. I might try that. I also never quite mastered the use of chopsticks, and I’ve tried. I just don’t think I really ever gave it a chance, resorting instead to the reliable fork.

No PUBLIC SMOKING because it stinks and makes us all stink, and cough too, so stick that in the burka and smoke it muslim friends.

The increasingly common sight of women wearing the Burka on the streets of Britain, should probably read increasingly common sight in my neighborhood. If Mr Bamforth saw a mouse in his house he would announce the United Kingdom is infested with rodents.

Were you here you would know they are like rodents swarming the neighbourhoods and taking advantage of all that belongs to the people of Britain. The don’t give one shite for our customs, traditions, or our colours. The government let them come here and they came by the millions overpopulating and devastating our resourses.

Oy! Hang on lass. I weren’t always this way you know. Once I understood and encouraged all to come here, but not THESE bloody muslims, and I ain’t sayin’ ALL muslims, but these in the Old Smoke need to go back home. They are awful buggers who spit on us as we walk our dogs, and call us names, not to mention the crimes so unless you live here you don’t know so don’t judge me by your standards missus.

I don’t give fuck one, if you have or have not always been like this. Human beings are not rodents, they are not like rodents, not now not ever. It is dehumanizing as all get out and the way you excuse it disgusts me. History shows us all what happens when we start doing that. Never ends well for the person being dehumanized and compared to animals. I am not judging anyone I am telling you straight fucking out, you are a bigoted asshole when you do this.

Not one thing, because I would go on living my life regardless of what someone else has to say about me. I would probably say something to the person that was mean but I’d go through my day just feeling sorry for them they are that way. I will say it again, human beings are not rodents, are not like rodents. They are human beings, every last one of us with one fault or another.

Backwards hats. I hate ’em. Those flat brim black one-size-too-big-for-all black ones.

Hey at least the burka hides all that stuff.
