“A move on straws” is afoot across the pond, and McDonald’s is driving the push. The fast-food chain is nixing plastic straws and moving to paper in all of its Ireland and United Kingdom restaurants in what the UK’s environment secretary calls a “significant contribution” to going green, the BBC reports.

Those locations currently use 1.8 million plastic straws per day. The straw switchover will start in September and be fully in place by 2019. The initiative comes after a trial run there, and new paper-straw trials are set for some McDonald’s locations in France, Norway, Sweden, Australia, and the US, CNBC notes.

CNNMoney notes that, per trash-mapping app Litterati, plastic straws are the sixth most common type of litter in the world.

Only about 1% of plastic straws are recycled, and, because of their combination of polypropylene-polystyrene makeup, they can take hundreds of years to decompose.

Some advocates say plastic straws are safer for certain customers with disabilities, but McDonald’s says the plastic versions will still be available upon request “for those that require it.”

..and yet WalMart, the nation’s largest retailer, still won’t make paper bags available to their customers.

Carry reusable bags around with you. I am guessing, since you’re a guy (really bad sexist stereotype incoming) you don’t do a lot of shopping, so you can carry one maybe two bags around with you for when you do go shopping. Leave them in the front seat of your vehicle and you will always have them around.

What happened to most people drinking from a glass, did they forget how to do that? I can see people that are disabled needing straws maybe kids etc but most people, drink from the damn glass. That and bottles of water, do you not know how to turn on a faucet and put an empty bottle under it to get water, provided you live in an area with safe drinking water. Or you know, get you a refillable cup, don’t buy plastic bottles. Good for McDs, still won’t eat there but this is a good thing.

Using a straw lets you leave the lid on the drink so it doesn’t splash all over the place while you’re driving.
