Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, and When a Myth is Not a Myth

Read Time:1 Minute, 9 Second

by David P. Greenberg

Remember Fourth Grade? We were told the myth that “Honest Abe,” walked six miles in the snow to return some lost change to a customer in his store. We were told that George Washington would take a beating from his father, rather than lie about the cherry tree. Also a myth. We were told that FDR said, “Only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” and that Kennedy said, “Ask what you can do for your country.” Those last two were not myths.

But myth or not, what are Fourth Graders being told today? “If you have a good enough lawyer, it’s all good?” or “Hush money payments to hookers are OK, as long as your mob-fixer is the one who pays them?”

Why are we arguing legalities?

What if the quote on the bottom of the Lincoln Monument read: “It’s only a crime if it was from the campaign?”

When Bill Clinton was under the ax for his Monica Lewinsky indiscretions, Republicans didn’t argue that the crime was fucking a fat chick. They argued that he had sullied the Presidency. That he had despoiled the legacies of men like John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington, FDR, and Teddy Roosevelt.

If Bill Clinton had fucked a thousand fat chicks, he wouldn’t have despoiled the office, one-tenth as much as Trump has.

I doubt anyone could convince me that Trump is not the most dangerous president we’ve had and of course he’s still president and still committing improprieties, illegalities and outrages. But you’re right, if his mentality is that it’s only a crime if you get caught – and even then maybe the truth isn’t true so no moral or legal judgments can be made – we’re living in a myth, not in the real world. The opinion of the hero is all that matters.

But of course Jefferson’s sex life is questionable, Kennedy had a regular assembly line running and FDR (and his wife) both had affairs. But if they all had satanic orgies in the oval office, none of them has put this country in such danger and I don’t think an ocean of Febreze will ever get the stench of Trump out of the White House.
