Crazy Rudy: When Truth Isn’t Truth

Read Time:1 Minute, 45 Second
Chuck Todd (L)  laughing at Rudy Giuliani’s exclamation that “truth isn’t truth”

When the truth isn’t true?
You have to admit
It’s hard to do.

But of course, we’re told that anything we read or hear or even see is fake. I suppose it’s possible to take that in the spirit of Taoism as concerns the ineffable nature of observable reality, but in our current political discourse, it really means that the president is the light, the way and the Truth and the sole source thereof.

Truth isn’t true and it’s all a matter of opinion. Rudy didn’t make that up himself, it’s common in arguments that try to defend religious assertions by, for instance, denouncing science as opinion or as being “only a theory” and that’s what these prophets for the unlettered are doing.  Quid est veritas?  What kind of person asks such a question?

Truth is what the president says, or sometimes his spokesmen, although they don’t often agree or even tell the same “truth” consistently. But being his truth, he feels justified in using it to inform deliberating juries as to the merits of the case and the honesty of the prosecutors. Being the light and the truth, of course, keeps that from being witness and jury tampering. It keeps anything he does from being a crime actually, or at least a prosecutable one. That’s actually a legal philosophy if we can hang a judicial robe on it as the Party of Trump is attempting to do by putting Kavanaugh on the bench for the rest of his life.

The president is above the law because the president is the truth and so he may and he does describe efforts to introduce fact-based truths rather than opinion based assertions as being a “Rat” as Trump calls John Dean, framing his revelations about another crooked president as one mobster turning on another. So what indeed is truth? Don’t ask me. Don’t ask Pilatus or Rudy.  The truth is not the truth after all. The Truth is Trump.

I was once a fan of RG, particularly after we worked with Bratton to bring the crime rate down and make the city safe. He’s ain’t the same guy. He’s a nut just like Trump.
