Reviewing Bob Woodward’s “Fear: Trump in the White House”

Read Time:4 Minute, 37 Second

by Gregory B. Gonzalez

I guess it’s no surprise to anyone with an IQ above fifty that Donald J. Trump, is a flat-out moron. Most of us with a thimble-full of common sense knew going in that his Presidency would be a shit-show from the second he took office. The only people who thought otherwise were his basket of deplorables and the shiny, happy, clueless idiots who decided to give him a chance. Kinda makes you wonder, now that Trump is in the second year of his four-year term if those idiots still feel the same.

Based on the latest polls, I think not. At the rate he’s going, Trump is only a few points short of getting garbage thrown at him. Yet, unbelievably,  he thinks he’s still universally loved. Yeah, in the way most people love getting a case of crabs.

According to Fox News, I would probably be diagnosed with ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’, but I’m not inclined to agree in that I don’t give two shits about any stupid thing he does anymore. I just roll my eyes and struggle to keep my lunch down. If anyone has a derangement syndrome about Trump, it’s his supporters. They exist in a vacuum of unreality where facts don’t matter and reality is whatever Trump says it is.

Thanks to Bob Woodward’s new book, “Fear: Trump In The White House”, my hope is that some people will wake up and see the orange orangutan for what he is, an incompetent fool with no clue as to what he’s doing. Providing anyone reads anymore.

Right from the outset of the book, Woodward recounts an incident in the Oval Office where members of his staff had to keep him from withdrawing US troops from South Korea and ending our trade agreement with them because he couldn’t understand why they were needed as part of our national defense. Though it was explained to him in the simplest of terms, he still didn’t get it. He even had the audacity to tell the experts they were wrong!

I think maybe they would have had better luck if they’d made their presentation with strippers holding pictures rendered in crayon. But that’s just me.

Unlike other books such as Michael Wolff’s “Fire and Fury” and Omarosa Manigault’s “Unhinged”, which share similar accounts of a West Wing in chaos, Woodward dispassionately gives us the facts without bias. Despite that, “Fear” does corroborate some of the accounts in those other books.

Woodward paints the Trump Presidency as a place filled with three kinds of people- ones who only want to serve the country, others who are sycophants to Trump, and finally, people out to use their positions of authority to enrich their own agendas. Talk about a hostile work environment!

As for Trump himself, he seems to think that just because he has ‘won’ the Presidency, he is now the ultimate authority and can do whatever he wants with impunity. The only problem is, his staff keeps reminding him that there are limits to what he can and cannot do. Yeah, I know, having to live under the rule of law can be a real bitch.

As far as Trump’s character goes, he is obsessed with his image and projecting himself as a man of strength; when in truth, he is plagued by indecision, doubt and not in command of the facts. He’s an idiot who thinks he knows more than the people advising him.

Although Trump has painted the book as ‘fake’, given Woodward’s reputation, I think it’s safe to say that his word is gospel at this point. If Trump had actually read the book, (it has pictures, Donnie!) he would know that Woodward does not trash him. In a few instances, he actually defends Trump. There’s no personal bias in the book.

If I feel empathy for anyone in these pages, it’s John Kelly, Gary Cohn, and James Mattis. It must be mentally exhausting dealing with such a dullard.

I think Steve Bannon described Trump best when he said,

He doesn’t like professors. He doesn’t like intellectuals, Trump was a guy who never went to class. Never got the syllabus. Never took a note. Never went to a lecture. The night before the final, he comes in at midnight from the fraternity house, puts on a pot of coffee, takes your notes, memorizes as much as he can, walks in at 8 in the morning and gets a ‘C’. And that’s good enough.

Which explains how we ended up with a ‘C’-grade president. Personally, I think Bannon was being too generous in his assessment. But when you stop to consider that his base has a fifth-grade reading level, then they got the President they wanted. Look, I don’t claim to be a genius (even though I am- 135 IQ!) but even I am aware that you can never stop learning. If you bullshit yourself into thinking that you know everything you need to know, then you might as well strap on the dunce cap. Trump has his stapled to his scalp.

“Fear” doesn’t exactly tell us anything we don’t already know, but it does cut through all the salacious bullshit and highlight how dire our current dilemma has become. With an election coming up, it’s more important than ever to vote and turn things around for the better. If we can.

The time to resist is now. VOTE.

I am reading this book now. It appears that Woodward has put forth a fair portrayal of our know it all and chief without injecting himself into the story. Some people should not be allowed to run the country. Not only should Trump have had to turn over his tax returns but also his transcripts. I am not a fan of Bannon, Christie, Priebus et al but it appears that they did their best to be the adults in the room. Unfortunately now of all of the adults are gone and we are left with a frat boy running the store. Good job Woodward. Poor America. Poor world.

It’s a good book. I listened to it on Audible and found myself still listening way into the night.

I have just started reading it and I agree Greg, it is really worth reading. A big factor here is that Woodward has a way of writing that is really straight and to the point. He has already made his bones on the Nixon debacle and other works. He really knows how to write.

I’ve not read this book yet, only because I was told most of the “good stuff” had already been leaked to the MSM prior to the book’s release.
