Hey Deplorables! Try a Little Common Sense

Read Time:4 Minute, 32 Second

by Bill Formby

There is a very small part of a song by the late, great Otis Redding, “Try a Little Tenderness” that I like to hum and change the words to just a bit. “Sometimes [I] do get weary, [rational people] we do get weary, of all the [bull shit they say], Just try a little [common sense], yes, just a little [common sense]”. It actually works pretty well with the melody and I wish Otis was around with his unique delivery style to sing it.

This would seem somewhat practical except somewhere about two years ago a lot of people put their brains in neutral and left idling by the roadsides all over America. Some of them are, or were, actually pretty smart people, others are and were about as sharp as a blunted butter knife, and the rest should have been locked up in the Alex Jones Home For Wayward Brains. In any case, their ability to apply simple common sense or any rational logic to the world has vacated their heads altogether.

One older man in North Carolina was asked about our recently arrested mad bomber while standing under a tarp as rain poured down at a Trump rally. His response was that the whole thing was fake. He first said he thought that Hilary Clinton and George Soros had mailed the bomb to themselves. I guess in his deluded state that it somehow made sense that they would make identical bombs, fly from New York to Florida to mail them to themselves and then fly back home to receive them. Makes sense to me I guess, what about you.

This same fellow though had a ready response when it was pointed out to him that authorities had arrested Cesar Sayoc and had substantial evidence that it was he who had made and mailed the bombs. “Well, sure”, he said, “He was paid to do it.” So in the span of 20 seconds, he went from flights of fancy bombs in the air to a paid hit man making bombs in his van.

That makes all the sense in the world if your brain is just sitting there idling and not actively engaged in thinking. Anyone with a brain would believe that with all the resources that the Clintons, George Soros, Barack Obama, and the rest have at their disposal they would hire a hit man living in a van plastered with Trump posters to make a bunch of bombs and send them to those that received them. I believe that. I also see unicorns trotting up and down my street every day.

I must ask all of my friends here at MMA what in the hell is going on in this country? In just the past few weeks there has been bombs sent out to prominent people who criticized Herr Trump, Nationalist in Chief, a White Supremacist killing at least 11 Jewish people as they worshiped, Saudi Arabia not just killing a journalist who was a legal resident in this country but sawing him into pieces, and Trump disbanding a nuclear treaty with the Russians thus undoing the Mutual Armed Destruction principle that was keeping the world from being blown to pieces.

During all of this, our current excuse for a President has, at best, been a little muted about all of it. His staff has defended his own rhetoric that has preceded it. His tacit approval of White Supremacy and of violent behavior of a congressional candidate body slamming a reporter leading the way for the hate-filled actions of his supporters. Even members of Congress backing him up by alleging that he is doing nothing wrong by name calling from his bully pulpit.

The Nationalist in Chief now reminds me of precisely of something we in the South have had to put up with for years. White Supremacist saying things that their followers often acted on while the leaders say, “I didn’t tell them to do that.” In the State of Alabama, the Southern Poverty Law Center finally put a stop to that when they sued Robert Shelton and the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan regarding the hanging of a young black man in Mobile, Alabama Michael Donald. An all-white jury awarded his mother $7 million in damages in 1984 which broke the Klan. There was also a conviction of 6 Klansmen in Mobile convicted of murder.

The Klan’s leader at the time, Robert Shelton, and I had many run-ins while I was a police officer in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where he lived. I was half of the first salt and pepper team with the police department and we used to sit outside their meeting place, The Imperial Press, just to aggravate them. He complained about us once but my shift commander told him that we were there to protect their rights. He requested only white officers but the Captain just smiled and said he could not do it. When talking to Shelton you could literally feel the hate coming off him.

Concluding this rant I still have to wonder, where has common sense gone. I feel like we are fighting the Civil War all over again. Donald Trump has virtually changed the entire landscape and definitions of American values in two short years in collusion with the Republican Party, his fondness for Russian aristocracy, and by lying to a group of gullible Americans. Who will stop him?

Common sense? Deplorables don’t have common sense or they wouldn’t be slavishly devoted to Trump.

I just read this article in the NYT and it stinks to high heaven:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/30/us/deaths-hurricane-florence.html

The Times has nicely juxtaposed a similar event that involved local police without even bothering to point out the disparity in the comparison. I’d sure contribute to a fund to get this mother the best lawyer around.

I could not agree with you more. I wonder if they could not find any more salt to pour into the open wound of this woman.

That’s it exactly. She’s suffered a horrible tragedy, so let’s pile on. Despicable!

The idiot in chief and his rhetoric have certainly emboldened the bigots. Many of whom were silent about their thoughts but now feel brave enough to spit them out as they think there is a President and movement that is on their side. We all know people that mutter racist nonsense till a Black guy is around. Seems like many of them are not trying to hide it now.

You are right on target Mike. I was born and reared in this part of the country. I think the biggest mistake Lincoln made was to simply accept the South and its people back into the union without a loyalty oath, not that it would do any good. In my mind once the Confederacy was formed the South became a foreign country that had declared war on America. Because of their continued pursuit of segregation they should have never been given equal standing in America until that had completely renounced their beliefs in segregation. Instead, we have allowed their hatred to permeate and pollute other areas of the country. Mike, I pointed out to you a while back that a real, live revolution was coming. We screwed around and let their leader become president.

Maybe we never stopped fighting the civil war and it is us who parked our brains and refused to see what we were living amongst. These loonies didn’t just pop out of pods when Obama was elected president.

Timmy, as a Southerner I will be among the first to admit the idiocy of the original Civil War. The South never “rose” in the first place. Those of us who grew up in this socially backwards part of the country can tell you first hand about the depths of depravity the good ole boys of the South sunk to for the sake of profiting from their farms and plantations. As the wealthy and the preachers of the South constantly whipped up hatred for the blacks and the Jews and other minorities among the working class it was something that I personally would never classify as rising. As a 10 year old I saw these so called brave Southern men drag a black man out of his home in Prichard, Alabama and hang him on a small tree in his front yard. It was the ugliest, most horrendous thing I have ever watched in my life. He was hung because he was seen talking to a white woman. It just so happened that she was thanking him for saving her dog from being run down in the street by a car. You know, no good deed goes unpunished. Since that day I have hated every single thing about the so called glory of the Confederacy. There can be no glory in going to war in order to continue to enslave and downgrade human beings. But that evening that group of brave, hooded, pieces of white trash told me all I needed to know about the glorious South.
