Marking the End of the American Dream?

Read Time:4 Minute, 13 Second

As I, and hopefully many, many others sit and ponder the choices for the upcoming mid term elections I try to make a connection between those who are running for office and myself. It seems reasonable to me that those who are asking me to vote for them should somehow be at least in the same chapter of the book even if we are not on exactly the same page. Fortunately, for me anyway, I live in a state where the choices are really pretty clear. We are not even in the same book.

If there is to be a “Blue Wave” you can bet the farm that it will turn blood red by the time it gets to Alabama. We actually have a fairly strong Democratic candidate running in our governor’s race. What that means is that it will probably take about and hour and a half after the polls close before he starts his concession speech. This is despite the fact that we have a governor by default who has simply been hanging around the capital city long enough that she was finally in the right place at the right time. When the prior governor was caught with his hand in the proverbial cookie jar she just happened to be the Lieutenant Governor.

The Democratic challenger is a fairly young guy who was the Mayor of Tuscaloosa and did a really good job there. He was instrumental in bringing Tuscaloosa into the 21st century and has done a good job of leading the city after the massive tornado destruction in 2011. But, alas, he is too bright, and really does not speak fluent dumb ass Alabama speak well enough to win. (Think George Wallace, Robert Bentley).

Then I cast my eyes beyond the state borders and the sight, of course, does not improve a lot. I mean, lets face it folks, how much similarity is there between any of us and the politicians, even those we will probably vote for. Generally speaking the representatives we select should have something in common with the people she, or he, represents. Instead we find more lawyers and business types that represent us.

One would think that the country is largely made up of lawyers and business owners. How many construction workers, teachers, police or or firemen are in congress? I’ll bet there are not many sanitation workers up there either, although there seems to be a lot of trash.

Think about this; How many people in this country have any thing in common with our current president? At least the last president had come from a broken home, worked on the street as a community organizer and had been out among the people. Even G.W. had hung out in a small Texas town for a while and the people even at the general store knew him and his wife had been a school teacher. Most of us could even related to Bill and Hilary Clinton. Bill from little Hope, Arkansas and Hilary working for a legal aid clinic.

The closest I can come to relating to our current president is the little sniveling rich kid that I knew back in the day that was such a wimp that no one of any substance wanted to be seen with him. It was not enough for him to have more than we did but he would lie about his family’s wealth to make it seem like it was more than it was. No one ever really trusted the punk because he had no real friends. His friends were whoever he could buy off that day.

But that is what our nation has come to be these days. If you are rich enough you can get into politics and promise people anything and they will believe you because the politics of deprivation is alive and well in America today. It is nothing new. It has been in progress since the country began. The rich have gotten richer and have continued to exploit the less fortunate. All Trump is doing is trying to take it to the next level where the wealthy are not just privileged but they are also in charge of everything.

All one has to do is look at the historical progress. At the outset it was only the wealthy who could become learned people and only learned people who could become political leaders. Sure there were a few exceptions here and there but by and large, those were the rules. This was actually brought to this country from Europe, but sold with different packaging. What we are seeing now is Trump and his gang actually trying to bring it out of the shadows and blatantly throw it in our faces. They are, in effect, saying, “the American Dream was never real and now we are tired of the game.”

Like the sniveling little rich kid, Trump has the friends he is buying off with his promises today, but tomorrow they too will be peons. It is just a matter of time.

Rachal I think a lot of us feel the same way. The “Again” part of MAGA was never all that great anyway unless you were a wealthy white male. If we are fortunate enough to oust Trump and the Republicans it will take decades to repair the damage they have done.

If Joe’s comment was a tad longer Mike might be able to make a full post it. What do you think Mike?

This isn’t the America I’ve enjoyed for 60 years, not at all, because once there was light there is only darkness, and I expect it will get worse.

We may be at the end. The smart people on the republican side have gerrymandered our Nation into one that our leaders are chosen by nuts, idiots and bigots.
How anyone of even the smallest amount of intelligence and conscience vote for Marsh Blackburn or Ted Cruz? Was Hillary so evil that voting for Trump was the better alternative? In Illinois we had a damn good governor in Pat Quinn yet even Democrats abandoned him thanks to propaganda surrounding him and we got four years of the worst governor in the Country. A true scumbag named Bruce Rauner.
Republicans have admitted openly that they want to dismantle Social Security and Medicare yet nearly half the population will vote republican anyway. I guess ignorance and bigotry trump humanity and good sense. I wonder how bad things will have to get before the typical Trump voter that actually believes the nonsense about government taking their guns and aborting their fetuses wake up. Trump could get caught sodomizing sheep in Central Park and his crowd would use it as proof he’s an animal lover and that makes killing elephants and rhinos okay. How do you convince these idiots who will be homeless without Social Security that the party they support will end it. Even though the party has admitted it. The danger we’re in with this Supreme Court is real. The five righties answer to nobody. They can rule for Trump’s side and when he’s gone they can overturn it and there’s nothing we can do about it. In a couple days our Nation is gambling on reason to get out and vote republicans out for if nothing else to stop Trump’s madness. History shows they won’t.
