The European Union: An Empire In The Making

In 2007, Jose Manual Barroso, the European Union Commission Chief, stated that “Sometimes I like to compare the EU as a creation to the organisation of empire. We have the dimension of empire.” French government minister, Bruno Le Maire, has recently said Europe should become an empire to compete with China and the USA. French President, Emanuel Macron, has called for a “real European army” to protect Europe from Russia, China, and the USA.

They never learn, do they?

The ultimate goal of the EU is openly admitted. The full unification of all of Europe both monetarily and politically. The only possible outcome of this ambition is a centralized European government. This, of course, would result in all member nations currently sovereign governments becoming something akin to the USA’s State legislatures.

The bigger the government the more corruption. It’s a very bad idea but, to the European Union and the majority who support The EU, it is a natural progression.

Now, let’s have a brief history lesson, shall we?

What happens when politicians try and enforce unity on disparate people. Let’s use Yugoslavia as the example.

Way back in the 17th Century there was the talk of unifying the Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs. It took a while to achieve. About three centuries as it happens. After the fall of the Austria-Hungary Empire after WWI, it finally happened. Yugoslavia was created.

Nice place. Went there once on holiday as a child.

Wee problemette. Lots of Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs wanted to be Slovenian, Croatian and Serbian. I think the Bosnians were in the mix somewhere too.

Anyway, it didn’t end well. You see, whilst there may well be lots of people who think the unification of everybody and everything is nirvana, there are also lots of people who don’t want to be part of some amorphous mass of everybody and everything. They want to be individual and separate. It’s called human nature in both cases.

When the human nature for unity is pushed onto the human nature for being distinguished from others it never ends well and that’s just one country.

The Mongols had an empire, the Ottomans had an empire, the Romans had one as, indeed, did the British. The Russians had one called the Soviet Union. Even the Nazi’s had one briefly, as did the Japanese.

Empires normally last a fair amount of time but, as the Germans and Japanese showed in the 1930’s and 1940’s, empires can also grow and wither at a very fast rate indeed.

The French minister, possibly realizing what he had just said, quickly added that he was meaning a ‘peaceful empire’. Well, I suppose there is a first time for everything eh?

French President Macron and German Chancellor Merkel have both called for a European army – which somewhat negates the ‘peaceful’ empire line if you ask me. Mind you, it has to be said, Russia is a bit of a worry lately and, as it borders the European Union there may well be an argument for such a thing. I claim no expertise in such matters.

Ultimate goals are not necessarily achievable of course but, should the European Union achieve its goal of ’empire’ or, if you prefer, a fully integrated and united Europe, sooner or later, it will end badly. History tells us this.

There is no ‘may’ about it. There will be trouble ahead.

A few months ago you compared the EU to the USSR, glad to see you’ve calmed down a little bit.

LOL! Neil calmed down? That is hard to accept Bobbie, but yes, at least in this context, you might be right.

Lyndon : Precisely. Empires are not good.

Holte : Very true but it is the EU desiring empire like status not me claiming it for them. As to what happens when we leave…..I haven’t a crystal ball. Time will tell I guess.

Historically empires usually become empires through invasion and conquest. Wondering what territory will the EU force their attentions on? The Russian Federation maybe, no way, too powerful. Could invade the Atlantic, no way, too wet. So an eastern or western invasion is out of the question and moving menacingly north or south would not be beneficial either. They have to get some territory from somewhere or lose face, not fitting for an empire to lose face, when they lose face it usually means they have to kill somebody to get their face back.

My recommendation is to wait until Great Britain exits the EU without a trade deal, when all the people are half starved and terribly upset, invade them. They could even advise the EU on how to run an empire.

You, a resident of the British Empire, formerly so of course, is worried that Europe will become an empire? Well, you’ve every right to worry. Look what you Limeys did to your fooking “empire” and how you treated its people. Africa? India?

Perhaps….I don’t sound convinced do I? 😬

It just depends on what time one is living in the empire Neil.

Empire threatening empire? What are you on about?

The EU wants to be an empire. Don’t take my word for it, just Google what senior EU bods have said.

You want to live in a European empire? Cool. Crack on love 😘

Really Norman? The EU will become an empire that threatens the Empire? Can’t hardly stop laughing. Love the picture though. Bloody brilliant!

There’s logic there Joe but, who wants to live in an empire? Historically it’s never been fun for the little people.

To be relevant a country either needs nuclear weapons or an economy that consumes enough that other countries need it for their economy’s well being. The most powerful force in the world is the American consumer. The smaller nations benefit greatly from the EU. I really think all Europe would benefit but I concede you’re closer the the situation and have a better handle on the matter Neil. But 300 million consumers stand a far better chance in deal making, especially if the nuclear arsenals of a few member nations to keep the Ruskies and Chinese from doing something silly, is far better than any of them going it alone.

😂😂😂😂 No not my beer…I tend to drink French or German anyway.

Empires by nature have never been great places to live for the ordinary people. That’s all.

I can’t believe you are afraid of the EU old bean. Army notwithstanding, do you really think they are going to rise up and take away your beer?
