When Justice Is What the People With the Most Guns Say It Is

Flag of the United Constitutional Patriots

by Glenn R. Geist

As everyone in the US knows, the Second Amendment to our constitution cites the need for well regulated militias, even though the concept is a bit of an anachronism.

When it became law, such militias were needed to put down uprisings and rebellions against the legitimate government, although to the people who call themselves “patriots” these days, the militias they envision and approve of would be formed to oppose the government, or to do what they think the government should do and are failing to do: such things as driving off asylum seekers or illegally arresting them.

Take the pompously self-titled United Constitutional Patriots.  Patriotic or not, taking up arms to enforce one’s own interpretation of the immigration law and thus usurping the power legal authorities, seems an odd use of the word “patriot,” but in the simmering stewpot of the new Populist Rebellion, simply owning a gun grants you the use of that title – so why not?  Constitutional it is not, of course.

The ACLU of New Mexico has demanded that Governor Lujan Grisham and New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas investigate this ludicrous band of vigilantes that has so far “arrested” nearly 300 people at the New Mexico border. they probably have no other choice anyway.

“these individuals should not attempt to exercise authority reserved for law enforcement…”

…said AG Balderas, stating what should be obvious to anyone.  It doesn’t seem any direct action has yet taken place, but in a time and place where what is legal authority and what is not is in question and the law is under attack from a government sworn to protect it, who knows where this will lead other than to chaos?

The prospect of armed militias, well regulated or not, battling the National Guard or the State Police would have been nearly inconceivable not long ago.

I’m afraid we’re in a new world – just like the old world of warlords and bandits and mobs and pogroms and slaughter, where ignorant armies clash by night (and day) and patriotism is measured by firepower and justice is what the people with the most guns say it is.

I’m confident that this militia will be shut down, but not so confident that we’re not playing Whack-a-Mole here. But a poorly regulated government is always going to have troubles like this.

America and its Second Amendment. There are more people worried about it than they are about their own healthcare. That’s fucked up.
