Britain Talks About Menopause

Read Time:2 Minute, 17 Second

I knew about menopause. I suppose we all know about menopause don’t we? It affects both men and women but, is particularly bad for women. There has been a lot of talk about better support for people suffering this menopause thing over here in Blighty.

Watching BBC Breakfast, I was shocked to learn that it doesn’t always wait until a woman is in her 50’s, as I had always assumed. A fifteen year old girl was suffering from it due to some abnormality in her genes or something like that.

Not only had she had to come to terms with the fact that she could never have children naturally, she even had to come to terms with coping with something that shouldn’t have happened, in normal circumstances, for another 40 years or so.

Interviews were held with mothers, daughters, sons and husbands about what effect the menopause had had on them as families.

Many of the children and husbands said they thought their mother / wife had lost her marbles at some points. This was mainly due to nobody really talking about it apparently.

Many of the women explained how they wanted windows wide open in mid-winter as they were burning up.

One chap and his daughter said, a couple of winters back, they sat at home in jumpers, scarves and heavy coats while their wife / mother wandered around, even outside, in shorts and a t-shirt.

A women’s cold water swimming club has been formed. Apparently, going for an icy dip can be very helpful to some women suffering. The BBC skipped around the fact that the women had humorously named their club ‘The Blue Tits’.

What really stood out though, was the humor that was now being brought out about the menopause. Now the conversation has been started, and more support is in place, the women – along with a few male sufferers – no longer felt so alone with their madness. The mood swings and so forth.

You would think that, in the 21st century, something that has been eternally around causing women in particular to suffer, would have been addressed a long time ago but no.

I suppose it was dismissed as some sort of taboo or something.

Still, things are improving, at last, for women of all ages who have to go through it. Good news.

Also good news is the fact that I’ve now realized that it was never my fault when the wife got annoyed at me. It was entirely the menopause. I had never done anything wrong after all. I just knew I was perfect in every way.

Isn’t that right dear?

Dear?

Oh Carol? Why are you waving that bread knife in my general direction?

Not sure Mike. I went through something when I hit 50! Bought a car I couldn’t afford, chased more women than usual, got divorced, again, and was cranky all the time. I called it male menopause.

I’ve never gone through this myself and I doubt any man has. Science has long since debunked “male menopause.”

I watched my mom start this process early and she turned into robo bitch on a dime at times. I avoided her for a few weeks like she was a plague. Stayed with my best friend and his family.
