Arctic Permafrost Melting 70 Years Before Predicted

The Trump gang have declared global warming a hoax, despite the mountains of evidence to the contrary, including the rapid melting of the Arctic permafrost.

In 2016, researchers from the University of Alaska Fairbanks hopped in a plane, heading for remote sites in the Canadian Arctic. “What we saw was amazing,” Vladimir Romanovsky tells Reuters. “It’s an indication that the climate is now warmer than at any time in the last 5,000 or more years.”

In yet another sign of a climate crisis, researchers found Arctic permafrost—made of ice from the last glaciation—is thawing 70 years sooner than the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change had predicted. As a result, the Arctic landscape is littered with deep depressions and ponds, some sprouting vegetation.  This was totally unexpected making scientists wonder what’s next.

In addition to what can be seen, underneath the tundra, abrupt thawing is taking place. And as soil microbes mix with natural reservoirs of organic carbon, carbon dioxide and methane are produced, speeding up warming, according to NASA, which notes the process “is not currently accounted for in climate projections.”

There’s no doubt something wicked this way comes, and much sooner than originally predicted, but you can’t convince America’s stunningly stupid president of that inescapable fact.

I’ve written off the idea of bringing back what now looks like a past geological era. It’s not going to be good for humans who in a hundred years or so may look back at our time as a golden era. What we like to call the balance of nature may not stabilize for millions of years with new species adapted to a different Earth. We are a disease and a fever may help get rid of us.

Cool for paleontologists though, with frozen carcasses appearing all over the place. Mammoth ivory mining is a big business and there’s a chance of cloning some extinct species. People are extracting rubies from uncovered rock in Greenland. Hey, it’s a highway to hell, but it’s still a road trip. Might as well enjoy it.
