Lock Up the Scumbags Who Torture Animals For Profit

Dog fighting ring in Gadsen County, Florida

by Glenn R. Geist

Gadsden County, Florida. Reading this far, you probably already suspect this isn’t going to be a pleasant story. It’s up in the panhandle, and although it’s flat country you’ll think of Harlan County, Kentucky or parts of the Ozarks. You’ll think of Erskine Caldwell’s stories and the kind of poverty and degradation unimaginable if you’re doing your thinking from Worth Avenue in Palm Beach.

It’s not that dog fighting and cock fighting don’t go on all over Florida and to be sure, all over the country, but when we read headlines including “Florida” we cluck, we sigh and think “what do you expect?”

What we do expect in Florida is 8 lengthy prison sentences resulting from 80 Federal charges announced by the United States Attorney’s Office A hundred dogs were seized. At least one drowned when one of the defendants left him in a swimming pool. There’s a good chance not all of these dogs will survive.

Eight people are in custody so far, if you extend the title “people” to those¬† selling dangerous drugs and torturing animals for profit. Are they people, who show no significant concern or evince any compassion for the suffering of others?¬† Perhaps some are able to hide human feelings behind a wall of hateful stereotypes, but some just don’t seem to have the software for it.

I can understand the kind of hate we often feel for people or groups of people, even when I feel it’s insane and dishonest, but who hates dogs – not specific dogs, but dogs in general – enough to indulge in dog fighting and the sometimes even worse “training” it involves? Who values life so little that they become, like Hollywood zombies enemies of all that breathes?

These people infuriate me more than most criminals, and I’ve been face to face with a lot of criminals. Unfortunately, the sentencing guidelines for assholes like this leaves much to be desired.

Yes it does. I think that treating animals as the same sort of property as inanimate things is an idea that’s no longer acceptable to most people and ought to be changed.
