The Idiocy Of Ideological Purity

Read Time:4 Minute, 32 Second
Once upon a time Americans resisted government over reach, and corruption. We need to do that again. Resist!

by Gregory B. Gonzalez

So, the Democrats have finally hit the ground running with their first debate of 2020. All the people we expected to stand out did, and the unknowns who wanted to grab their shot at the big time did their best to make an impression, even if it wasn’t particularly effective. (Note to Beto O’Rourke: You may want to make your opening statements in english first. I mean, I’m Hispanic, and I had no idea WTF you were talking about!)

Anyway, it was a refreshing change to hear a political debate that was civil, sounded intelligent, and didn’t include the word, ‘terrific.’ I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s forgotten what it was like before the tangerine menace infected our daily existence. Trump made it a point to say that he thought the debate was, “BORING,” but then, I guess it would be to someone who has the mentality, maturity, and intellect of a toddler. What was he expecting, naked women? Couldn’t he just picture Tulsi Gabbard naked like the rest of us?

Having said that, I wanted to bring up this one subject before all the muckraking began in earnest, this whole idea of ideological purity.

For some reason, progressives have latched on to the idea that if candidates don’t rigidly adhere to their beliefs and ideals, that they are unworthy of their support. Green Party activists and Berners are prime examples of this type of behavior. Like back in 2016, they refused to vote for anyone other than who they supported, or worse, voted for Trump. And look at where we are now.

I think the worst part is that they haven’t learned a damned thing. Look, it’s good to have ideals and stick to your guns, but you have to learn how to compromise and pick the fights you know you can win. Let’s be honest- the last man standing is not going to be everyone’s first choice, but in order to beat the orange shitgibbon, everyone on the left is going to have to unite under a single banner.

What good is fighting for the changes you want when you’re fighting against a regime that’s totally against you? Better to get someone on your side and then hold their feet to the fire to get change. That’s how it’s supposed to work.

The whole notion of ideological purity in the Democratic party is illogical in that we all have similar ideas, but differing opinions. It’s easier in the Republican party because they have absolutely no ideas and practically the same opinion. It’s easier for them to get behind a single leader, because it’s easy for a loud-speaking idiot to prove he’s smart to a room full of morons.

I know Trump makes it easy to look like change comes from the top, but that’s because he abuses his power, doesn’t govern by the rule of law, and surrounds himself with enablers who just use him to enrich themselves. But beneath that, the Republicans at the state level are making changes to our daily lives that you probably don’t even notice until they affect you personally.

While Democrats and progressives argue over who we should get to lead our party, the Republicans are passing laws to restrict women’s reproductive rights, spoil our environment, gerrymander voting districts, and make it harder for our youth to get an education. They want to keep the populace powerless, complacent, and dumb. That’s how they retain power.

So what if the candidate who eventually wins the democratic nomination doesn’t totally share your values or positions? Hillary Clinton wasn’t my first choice either, you know. I thought she was an unscrupulous, entitled opportunist more interested in being president for no other reason that she thought it was ‘her turn.’ But I voted for her because the alternative was worse. Anyone who thought otherwise is a delusional fool.

Progressives, Berners, Far-Leftists, do yourselves and the rest of us a favor- lighten the Hell up and just roll with it. We need you, now more than ever. You might be annoying, but I’m swallowing my pride and asking, no, begging you: DON’T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE YOU MADE IN 2016!

In fact, I’ll go you one better- follow Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s lead, and run for office yourselves! If you really want the changes you’re so passionate about, don’t sit on your asses and wait for someone else to make those choices for you. If Trump and the GOP have made one thing abundantly clear, it’s that any idiot can be in government.

A lot of people may not realize it, but traditional conservatism is slowly dying out and being replaced by white supremacy, religious fanaticism, and outright greed. It’s these forces which are making it so that the majority of this country will be forced to live by minority rule. We need to stop it, and we need to stop it NOW.

Marianne Williamson’s thought that we can beat Trump with love is a nice sentiment, but this ain’t the 60’s, The Lovin’ Spoonful broke up years ago, and only stoners still wear tie-dye. This is a war for survival, and we’re not going to win it if we continue to fight amongst ourselves.

Resist.

That whole boring thing, he did that when they were talking about that man and his little baby girl dying trying to cross the Rio Grande. I was crying when I found that out like 5 minutes after. His presidency has me dependent on anti depressants because I cannot deal, I cannot deal with the hate I get thrown at me on what seems like a daily basis now.
I’ll be doing what I do every time because I am one of the every lucky ones I live in California. I’ll be voting for Kamala Harris in the primary then whoever is the nominee I’ll be busting hump trying to get them elected like last time. I don’t care who they nominate even if it’s Tulsi Gabbard or Marianne Williamson and they repulse me truly repulse me with their stands on certain things Gabbard in particular. Right now the right wing is helping fund Williamson so she can stay in as a candidate, I think that tells you a WHOLE lot right there. Good thing is Commander cuckoo bananas made it possible for our first African American president Dolt45 might make it possible for our gay pres or female prez.

I’m a huge Harris fan and will vote for her in the primary as well. If she doesn’t get nominated there will be a struggle, unless it’s Biden, who I actually like sometimes, and Mayor Pete, maybe Beto, but a Bernie and a Gabbard would be hard to swallow. I will not vote for an idiot like Williamson. Not ever.

It’s the same over here regarding Brexit Jess.

Both sides simply throw hatred and vitriol at each other.

The most extraordinary thing I find is that, as a not particularly committed, non-passionate, Brexiteer who voted remain, I seem to be on the most middle ground.

Me???? How???? How???? How the hell can I be on any middle ground????

I treat both opinions with respect. I go onto both ‘leave’ and ‘remain’ Facebook pages. I try to make moderate, rational comments.

I acknowledge the very clear risks regarding leaving, or I mention the very clear risks of becoming a ‘state’ of the EU rather than an independent country.

Neither is particularly contentious and both views are valid.

All I get is vitriol and insults.

Bammy the moderate eh?…It really is a mad mad mad mad world!!! 🙂

Oh this is not hate because I am a liberal at all. This is hate because I look like a Hispanic. I am an olive skinned long curly dark haired blue eyed exotic beauty that fits no category she is placed in at all. I pass for a number of races. Obama was indeed a moderate otherwise right now we would have a national health service and a multitude of very liberal policies in place and guess what..WE DO NOT have them. So yeah Prez O was very much a moderate as anyone. I see you did not say anything about my mucis choices, too scared weren’t you. AYUP George Michael way gay but could still steal your girlfriend couldn’t he? That’s like my best fried, bastard looks like he was chiseled as a Greek statue. If he wasn’t gay…nah… I still wouldn’t because that would be like doing my brother and that would be really icky.

Bravo!

The old trope about the perfect being the enemy of the good doesn’t cover it. Ideological purity is impure and the enemy of the future, of progress.

Look, the people who wrote the Bible assumed slavery was normal, racism was normal, infanticide, genocide, extermination of mankind itself was the sort of thing God did for kicks. We make heroes out of murderous bastards like Luther, because he did something else we do like. We use “crusade” like it was a good thing. Is there anything we do or say that isn’t the result of self-serving hypocrisy? (both of us excepted, of course)

We were never more ethical, moral or good than we are now. We have slowly come up from the primordial muck, not fallen from some kind or grace. And you’re right – we don’t need to look for more heroes or tear down past ones we need to be our own proponents and not squabble like children

Excellent article.. And resonant of Blighty too.

We all seem to be surrounded by unwavering ideological lunatics.

I predict the orange one’s there for a second term.

Good luck one and all!!!

We do need to resist, but, except for small pockets here and there, we really aren’t. Why do you think that is?
