No Doubt You Are the People and Wisdom Will Die With You

Read Time:2 Minute, 50 Second

by Glenn R. Geist

To be or not to be, that is the question….

“…what’s in a name?” That’s the other question. Words like moral, liberal, ethical, democratic and others are like Leggo blocks and you can make what you will out of them while someone else makes something quite different.

I keep mulling over the question being asked by the new, young wokesters packed with moral certainty: doubt and Gluten-free. Can Joe Biden be forgiven for doing what was at the time, his job: ascertaining the will of the majority of his constituents? The segregation-related practice of busing students and the mechanics of the laws behind it are not the issue. Authority is the issue: whence does it proceed?  Certainly the American axiom that the government and its laws derive from the will of the people is in question even today, regardless of the fire and brimstone of the young and the ruthless and the self-anointed .  The unelected elect are marching.

“no doubt you are the People and wisdom will die with you”
-Job 12:2

There was no clear-cut answer to many questions that were in dispute in my day, All sorts of opinions were at war. People who thought themselves liberal and fair-minded differed on the means to end  de-facto segregation and do it legally. It was Biden’s job to study them all without prejudice. That’s something quite at odds with the Puritan school of Democracy, making it so hard to read facebook or watch MSNBC without getting into a fight. Biden needs to apologize for his impure thoughts of 50 years ago which don’t coincide with the certainties of today’s protectorate, else he cannot be forgiven! I mean we understand the 60’s – we learned all about it from the propaganda we got in the 80’s when we were children.

No, Democracy be damned, Representatives and leaders should owe their charter to future generations and the confederation of activists that comprise them. Damn them if they guess wrong.

No, what is right was always right and morality was fixed in the week God made everything, right?

New occasions teach new duties; Time makes ancient good uncouth;

They must upward still, and onward, who would keep abreast of Truth

-James Russell Lowell

So look, God made Eve subservient. Abraham knocked up his slave woman and let his wife throw her out into the desert.  David had a whole lot of wives and obtained them under unacceptable circumstances. John Wayne grabbed and kissed women until submission.  What used to be seen as good and godly, or at least normal, now seems uncouth. I’m betting that in 50 years our young activists, bragging about being of a suitable race and gender and affluence  and social class and level of victimhood and damning others,  will be seen in a new light. Ancient good and all that. Morality changes, the truth is slippery and enlightenment causes suffering.

“we must suffer, suffer into truth”

-Aeschylus-

The human race has taken a long time to reject what most of us see as evil.  Most of that change has been recent, much in my lifetime, yet we get more impatient as we succeed. It has involved much suffering. We piss on the ashes of so many who did so much and mock them for their fallibility.  If you want to call yourself “Woke” start there.

There are those who are convinced that “Hitler Germany” couldn’t happen here, in this day and age. It could, and if we aren’t careful, it will. Trump has a legion of wild-eyed, salivating followers, and they will follow him most vigorously.

Depends on hoW you define forward. The Hitler Jugend and the Red guard are examples. When I hear so much rage about the class struggle, getting rid of free markets and banks and private enterprise and investments _ when we chose candidates by race and doctrinal and uncompromising purity. I see Marxism. I hear calls for different kind of citizens with different rights , I see tyranny coming down the road and no matter who wins the next election

Very well said. Context has to be taken into consideration. Incrementalism isn’t the same as being complicit. Of course youth is always impatient. They are the leading edge that pulls the rest forward.
