Republicans, Democrats, and the Heat of Summer

by Bill Formby

OK folks, the 4th of July has come and gone so it is, by any definition, summer. Actually, to my mind it has been summer since the first week in May when the temperatures were hitting 90 degrees with the humidity bouncing around in the 70 – 80 % range. Anyone who had ever dreamed of having their own steam room simply has to step outside for 10 minutes and they could be happy.

I was really glad when I had the garage door opener repaired and cleaned out a lot of junk out so I can actually put my car in the garage. Shirley, who is still in Florida caring for her 93 year old dad, had gotten a new door opener and ordered me to fix the damned thing. So now, going out and getting into a car that is hotter than the aforementioned temperatures, is now much more pleasant.

My current vehicle being black with a black interior is now fairly comfortable. It also makes my escape from home into the sweltering heat much more pleasant, plus, since I back my car into the garage, it makes me feel a little like Batman roaring out of the bat cave. Get in the car, start it and touch a button, and I am roaring out of my drive way, sort of like Batman appears to be charging out of his cave. What is even better is getting into the car wearing shorts and my legs not being seared by the black leather seats.

Anyway, I am no longer getting into the car at probably the boiling point of water and my air conditioner taking 15 minutes to reach roughly my body’s core temperature. So I am good until I get to where I am going then dash from the car to the air conditioned store.

It has been a while since my last rant here at MMA so I felt it was time to vent again. I mean The Donald seems to be continuing to try to screw up the world, and though I have pretty well weaned my way of not watching the mainstream media My world is a little bit happier. Don’t get me wrong, I still sort of keep in touch with his daily screw ups, but it is easier to tolerate without all the talking heads who try to justify his ignorance. I just pretend that he is a figment of my imagination.

I really do hope that the Democratic Party can somehow get their act together and defeat him next year. It is really hard to imagine that they will but they really need to focus a lot more on that than arguing between the 20+ candidates running for the office.

It is sad in a way that, with Trump’s views on race, that Kamala Harris is all but outright calling Joe Biden a racist for working with racist legislators. I mean, I am not sure what he was supposed to do back in the “bad old days” of racism, and I see no game changing if her approach to most Republicans is to simply pretend they don’t exist. Trust me when I tell you that there will always be some racists in the federal government. Mitch McConnell is going no where, and unless the Democrats manage to sweep the Senatorial races he and others will be around to poke racism will still have a big say in all of the proposed changes that should be made.

Racism is a lot like the oceans that surround us. While they may vary a bit, sort of like the ocean tides, one has to be able to navigate through or over them if one is actually going to get any where in this world. It does not matter how pure one’s intentions are in terms of helping the people in this country, one will have to understand that occasionally the race issue is still there.

I don’t mean to be critical of the general ideas that the Democrats, as a bunch, have going forward but for the good of the country the candidates need to not be seen as a crocodile eating her young. I am for a solid health care program, actually I am not sure I completely understand why Republicans trash the idea like they do. Well, other than trying to make their rich supporters trying to get richer.

If you are a Democrat, you have to at least like Joe Biden a little. I mean this is a man who has no claim to fame other than being an elected official for the majority of his professional life. So he gets some kudos for being around and helping out all he has done for the people in this country even if you do not agree with his overall policies. Plus he has been in some variation of presidential politics it seems like forever.

I think it is part of his likability that does him in, it seems, every time. He has been a steadfast, good guy from day one. But, he tends to show that, with all of that campaign experience, he has not learned a lot. He still steps all over himself when he does not follow the script. Joe, listen up here man, you are not real good at free styling.

Then there is good old Bernie. I think that his agenda is great, but I also think that it is “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”. If Bernie were to win and start carrying out his ideas the people would get whip lash trying to keep up with the changes.

Health care coverage for everyone is a great idea whose time is way past due. Free college tuition for everyone, not so much. Even if there is a way we could afford it, I really don’t believe its time is upon us. Most everyone in America sees college as a necessity to have a decent life. Hell, after 45 years of teaching in universities I have watched many students come through and barely put in an effort to become college graduates. College is not for everyone. There are so many college programs around the country now cranking out students that having a college degree now is much like a high school degree 40 years ago. Many of the degrees are not worth the paper on which they are written.

I believe that employers are wising up to that as well. I heard someone criticize some systems in Europe because fairly early people are directed on their educational tracks into either and academic or professional curricula or toward a curriculum geared toward a craft or trade. Here in Alabama there are shortages of trained people in the trades. From most of my reading it is pretty much the same everywhere. Computer technology is one trade that rarely has to look very hard for a quality job.

I am not exactly sure what Elizabeth Warren’s agenda is at this point. I mean she makes the same noises as Bernie, Kamala, and Joe Biden. Improving health care, education, and opportunities for all are givens if one is a Democrat and, of course, getting Trump out of the White House, but she has been out front on most of these issues for a while now. But, can she beat Trump.

It was clearly proven during the last presidential election that getting more votes than Trump is really not the issue. Beating him is another thing. Hillary should have won last time but she took her eye off the finish line. If Trump is to be beaten he must be given a good old fashion butt whipping. Even then I believe we will see him try to stay in office.

I know that all of you are not football fans but a philosophy of Coach Nick Saban of The University of Alabama will not be lost on you. His philosophy has been, and still is, every single play of each game is critical. It does not matter if his team is ahead 60 points or one point, every player has to be giving 100 % of effort on every single play and it drives him nuts when even one player on the field does not do that.

In the last election Hillary did not give 100% of an effort on every single day of the campaign. Missing going to Wisconsin, as we now know, was a critical mistake. Her campaign, for all intents and purposes, simply conceded Wisconsin to Trump. She did not attempt to dominate Trump at every turn.

That made this election more difficult in a way. As president Trump can manage to keep himself in the headlines every day that he chooses. Of course he partially did that during the last election but not with the clout he now has as president.

So whoever is the Democratic nominee must hit him everyday about all of the B.S. he has done while playing president. And, while I don’t believe in a totally negative campaign, he has made enough blunders to bring up several every day, that it should be broadcast to the country everyday, in every state.

But, I will say this. If the Democratic party does not coalesce around their nominee, Trump will get a second term. This means that each of these candidates should be working with their bases on behalf of the Democratic nominee from the day after the convention until the evening of the voting without letting up in order to take the presidency away from the Republicans, but also take the Senate away as well.

If they will do this America will win. If not, we, meaning those of us who care about this country, may need to bend over and kiss our butts good bye because another four years of Donald Trump will irrevocably change this country to into a disaster from which it will never recover.

Isn’t it all exhausting Bill? The constant bickering, lying, corruption just beats me up. I’m considering watching Spongebob Squarepants instead of the news. Much less depressing.

We need a Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood for adults and more soothing reporting. I agree, the news is doing brain damage.

One thing I see as an asset in Biden is what the born yesterdays do not see. He and I, about the same age, remember when things were so much worse in so many respects and are not so naive as to think you can effectively oppose a massive part of the population and maintain a democracy without compromise and patience. “when do we want it? NOW” still rings in my ears. I believe in redemption, in personal growth and change. They do not – it’s zero tolerance and original sin.

Many have forgotten how many different kinds of people came together to protest and sometimes to educate and don’t want to credit “impure” people who none the less facilitated progress. Biden was one of those.

Glenn, I am like you. Before anything else the ship has to righted and I am not comfortable with a newbie practicing on doing that at this point.

And yet his approval ratings go up. 47% up 5 as of today. Why?

Lemmings aren’t really self destructive – but we sure as hell are.

Hell, even a broken clock is right twice a day. Thinking about it, even a 47% approval rating for Trump means 53% non approval. What really comes to light though is that Trump has never even made it to the 50% mark during his entire term. That may be another first. It also shows that the old adage coined by Ron White is that, “You cant fix stupid.”
