Jesus Wasn’t A White Guy—Why Racism is Illogical

by Gregory B. Gonzalez

I was around five years old when I met my first black friend. His name was Massa Fortenberry, and his family had recently emigrated from Africa to my neighborhood in East Los Angeles. I was fascinated with him because he was so different from me; darker skin, spongier hair, weird accent, it was like meeting an alien. I used to love patting him on the head to feel the texture of his hair and the earthen, oily smell it it used to leave on my fingers.

When I asked my mother why he looked so different from me, she said it was because he was black. Confused, I replied, “He’s not black- he’s brown!” I always thought it sounded dumb to refer to him as black,(this was back in the day before everyone started referring to black people as African-Americans, which, techinically, he wasn’t. Massa and his family weren’t citizens at that point,) though I never looked at him or treated him any differently than I did anyone else. He was simply my best friend.

We used to do everything together, and through our friendship, our families became close until they moved away. I remember on the day they left, I hugged Massa so hard because I didn’t want him to go. I cried for a week because I missed him so much.

But that’s the thing about being young and innocent, you don’t really see things like color or the differences in race, you just see people. I was raised to judge people for who they are, not for what they look like.

Racism is not an ingrained behavior, it’s a learned one. Nobody on Earth comes out of the womb hating blacks, Jews, or Asians. It’s an indoctrination burned into the human psyche due to fear of the different, ignorance, hatred, intolerance, and self-loathing.

I think bigotry exists on some level in everyone (usually manifesting in the form of stereotypes,) but that is a far cry from outright hatred, which is what I’m really talking about. There has to be something deep and dark within your soul to have such unreasonable hatred toward someone simply because they don’t conform to your idea of ‘normal’. It’s more of a statement of who you are and what you’ve been taught to believe.

I don’t really understand white supremacy. There’s no logic behind it on any level. Racists can justify it any way they like, but it always boils down to the same thing- fear and intolerance. And again, it makes no sense, especially when you stop and realize that they created the ‘problem’ in the first place. Nearly every black person in this country is the descendant of a slave, someone who was dragged here in chains to work because white people were either too lazy or too cheap to work their own land. And it’s been that way practically since the dawn of time.

Genetics aren’t proof of one race’s superiority over the other. Every subset of humanity has one advantage over the other. Skin color, hair and eye color don’t mean diddly squat. Hitler wanted a perfect aryan race, but even by his lunatic standard, he was unfit to be a part of it.

Am I the only one who thinks that neo-nazis and southerners who scream, “The South will rise again!” are idiots? First of all, they admire a bunch of losers, which pretty much tells you all you need to know about them. Or how about the ones who scream that they’re not racist, just proud to be white? Listen up, buttercups- if you think that being white makes you better than everyone else, you’re still a racist.

Why all the hatred towards Jews? Judaism isn’t a race- it’s a religion. They’re every bit as caucasian as you are. By the way, being that racism and conservatism kinda go hand in hand, don’t you think it’s a bit hypocritical to support Israel? Because the last time I checked, Israel is full of Jews. Kind of defeats the purpose, don’t you think? Oh,and in case you weren’t aware, Trump’s son-in-law, daughter, and grandchildren are Jewish.

For that matter, Jesus Christ wasn’t a white guy. I know that’s kind of a hard pill for white christianity to swallow, but you can’t change the facts, no matter how delusional you may be. Even if he wasn’t, do you honestly think he’d abide your brand of insane hatred? I highly doubt it.

Republicans love saying that Mexicans are taking our manufacturing jobs away, but let’s be honest- who is really responsible for that? Hispanics only came here for work because corporations didn’t want to deal with unions or pay higher wages and benefits. Who was it that moved manufacturing jobs overseas to cut costs? I highly doubt it was the day laborers hanging out in front of the local Home Depot.

Now, I’m sure that some mouthbreathers out there are going to be screaming that I’m being a ‘reverse-racist’, but come on, I’m just pointing out the truth. I’m not condemning every white person on the planet. The people who are responsible for most of this shit just happen to be of a pasty disposition, nothing more. I don’t believe that a whole race should be condemned for something a handful of greedy people did. I mean, not every slave-owner treated his people like shit. They just didn’t know any better.

For instance, slave reparations is a hot topic right now, but instead of cutting a check (which won’t solve the problem,) I think the best way to do it is by putting money into the community- more money into education, job training, and other social programs meant to elevate. This country owes a debt that can’t really be paid, but if we truly believe in equality for all, we should at least level the playing field.

I’m no social justice warrior, but I do believe in equality for everyone. That’s what this country was founded upon. No one is more ‘equal’ than anyone else, and certainly not due to skin color. Our diversity is what makes us the nation we are; it’s what gives us our strength. If that is so hard to understand, then perhaps maybe you should go back where you came from, though I highly doubt they’d want you back.

Oh I expect you will say he spoke no English either you heathen. SHAME on you.

“Genetics aren’t proof of one race’s superiority over the other.” AYUP they are. when you have really long curly dark hair (thanks Indian ancestry, also being stubborn and not getting hair cuts) blue eyes and skin the color of olives with an ass you apparently can bounce quarters off (thanks Puerto Rican ancestry). I am way superior because of my genetic make up 🙂

I didn’t know that about your ass, then again there’s no reason why I would. Oh. And you are making some really good points here 🙂

AYUP, some rando dude told me that a little bit ago and I said something along the lines of if bouncing quarters off my ass is a good time for you, you need to get a better life 🙂 I’m that robo bitch men meet, when they approach with stupid pick up lines. Do me and yourself a favor, come at me with yourself no stupid lines. My rents used to say chosen, mixed babies were the very best of babies. It was just because of me, their little mixed adopted baby is all because there were other times my mom would have killed me, all the way dead, rather than look at me for something I had done that displeased her.

Oh, don’t you remember the congresswoman Michelle Bachmann who famously said she was sure Christianity was and American religion because the Bible was written in English. You just can’t fix stupid.

What a despicable woman she is, and she’s far from being alone when it comes to Republicans.

Yeah you can Bill, but you would go to jail or prison for a really long time if you fixed it properly 🙂 Oh Crazy Eyes, what has she been up to other than revelling in dolt45’s admion doing religious stuff that she has no business doing on my dime. One more reason I have not paid taxes yet to the feds, too much non separation of church and state now.

Um, Jess. I was talking about the genetics of one single race, not a mixture. Racists like to believe in the ‘purity’ of being white. They’re too dumb to understand that everyone is a mutt.

I get that but to these people, people like me are less than also. Not too dumb at all, they know they just use it to their advantage.

Genetic diversity is what keeps the evolutionary ball rolling. Without it, humanity would grow stagnant and die out.

Somehow that “Jesus wasn’t white” meme has entered the great swamp. Nobody knows what fatherless Jehoshua looked like or even who his ancestors were. The two gospel stories are completely different.

There were stories that his father was a Roman legionaire called Pantera and those at that time and place were Germanic. People in that part of the Levant had ancestors who were Hittite, Phoenician, Philistine, Babylonian, Greek, Roman and possibly Sumerian. He was not an Arab. They didn’t arrive for 600 years. I recently saw a film clip promoting the brown Jesus meme and the guy was black with dreadlocks. Nobody knows what he looked like or if he really existed, but he was not a Zulu. For all we know he was a made up character.

Of course when it comes to White Guilt, I’m white enough!

All my life I’ve listened to people tell me I must tan easily or that I didn’t look Jewish because I have straight hair and green eyes so I’m sensitive in this matter. Race obsession is killing this country and I’m sure it’s on purpose.

Glenn, I think Jesus was more Mediterranean in appearance than anything else. And I’m not real big on white guilt, either. You’re no more responsible for slavery than I am, and I’m not white. Reparations is a nice idea, but guilt has nothing to do with it. All I’m saying is that we should work on elevating people and giving them the opportunities they may otherwise lack.

I’m not sure people aren’t given opportunities, but I am sure there’s a sad and lazy despair resident in blighted communities and no number of opportunities are going to displace it. It has been with us so long it is now cultural.
