Star Trek: Enterprise-Season One-Was Probably Better 17 Years Ago

Read Time:1 Minute, 33 Second

by Michael John Scott

I like Star Trek but somehow managed to miss the Star Trek: Enterprise series, which I’m watching now. A lot has changed since 2002 when this iteration of the famous space show was produced, and one of those changes were the clunky special effects, which confuses me because other SciFi shows produced at that time, and even earlier, do much better in that department.

In addition, the acting leaves a lot to be desired. There is also complete neglect of military protocol. In this ST everyone happily calls everyone else by their first names, which just isn’t done in the military except by those of equal rank. I find that off putting, as well as the fact the aliens pretty much all look the same, some makeup artists version of human, with green faces, gills, and etc. showing little imagination by those who do such things.

At this point in the series, and I confess I’m only on Season One, Star Trek: Enterprise doesn’t come close to reaching the lofty heavens of The Next Generation, and certainly not the amazing Discovery. The writing and acting is terrible, the episodes focus on meaningless tasks instead of exciting exploration of those places they were going where no man has gone before.

The opening theme, a Rod Stewart gem, apparently diminishes all of the other Star Trek opening themes by using, according to the serious ST geeks,  a pop song that is unnecessary and awful-sounding.  I liked it, and found it to be the best of some of the episodes.

In conclusion I give STE 2, Season One, two stars.  That being said, I am intrigued, and will probably watch the next season anyway.  Now  beam us up Scotty!

A refresher never hurts. And also, you may want to check out STAR TREK: NEW FRONTIER by my friend, Peter David. It’s amazing! A new captain, a new ship, and a new mission! It’s funny, full of action, and a read you can’t put down! Trust me!

Admittedly, ENTERPRISE is a hard sell to most Trek fans, but as it goes on, it does get better in season 2 once they get past the whole “temporal cold war” arc. Season 3 was equally weak, but had some good moments. The show hit its stride with season 4, but it got cancelled before they could really kick it into high gear with the advent of the Romulan War.

Also, there’s a lot there that’s important to Discovery, especially with the upcoming season. And Mike, I highly suggest you watch Deep Space Nine- it’s the best of all the shows. And did I mention that it’s also where Section 31 made its first appearance?
