Saturday morning, Officer Stephen Carr was waiting for his partner behind the Fayetteville police station when a man armed with a 9mm handgun shot him multiple times, the department said. Responding officers pursued the suspect, London T. Phillips, into an alley and shot him dead in a gun battle.
The fire department and EMS showed up, tried to save Carr and Phillips, and both died at the scene. Which left the police department asking why.
In a statement, police said 27-year-old Carr Police Chief Mike Reynolds said he…
“…was ambushed and executed while sitting in his patrol vehicle. It appears the suspect came into the back parking lot and just executed my officer. He had no motive at all.”
Carr, a high school athlete, was hired by the department in 2017, worked the entertainment district, and…
“…served our community with dedication and professionalism for the past 2 1/2 years, he is a HERO. Our thoughts are with Officer Carr’s family during this tragic time.”
