Why Does My Dog Love Licking Me?
Why does my dog lick me so much? Well, there can be a few reasons for this, or possibly a combination depending on your dog and the context in which he is licking.
• Dogs tend to lick or groom another’s face as a sign of submission, to express to the other dog that they submit or pose no threat to the other dog. Your dog could be trying to let you know he respects you as the boss. Having said this I feel it’s important to note that some people feel strongly against the idea of a pack leader or alpha in domestic dogs. Considering that I would still equate this behavior between dogs to express a level of trust.
• He wants to show you he loves you! This is the answer most people want to jump at, while short excited bursts of licking can certainly mean this, more prolonged constant licking may not stem from pure affection.
• The texture/taste/act of licking is calming to your dog. I have seen this first hand, some dogs find the act of licking or the texture of a particular material or object enticing. Some lick to relieve stress, possibly from lack of exercise or environmental stress, while some may just find this a nice relaxing way to pass the time.
