If You Lose Your Sense of Smell You Need To Self-Isolate

There’s been a fair amount of talk about people who test positive for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 but show no symptoms. Now, doctors are warning about some odd symptoms many may not have realized are actually symptoms: a lost or reduced sense of smell or taste.

The New York Times notes a few anecdotal reports, like a mother who couldn’t smell her baby’s dirty diaper or a cook who said food started tasting bland. British ear, nose, and throat doctors on Friday urged anyone who experiences such symptoms to self-isolate for seven days, even if nothing else seems to be wrong.

“We really want to raise awareness that this is a sign of infection,” says one.

Doctors in Italy agree that, based on what they’ve seen and heard from patients, there are likely many experiencing only these symptoms and unknowingly spreading the virus. Business Insider calls them “hidden carriers.”

There have been several comments on twitter about him not looking well these days. I would put that down to The Donald perhaps getting his first real taste of a president suddenly facing a REAL crisis. One that he can’t lie about, or push off on someone else. Looking at the information on the HHS website on Emergencies the actions he took not only may have been late, but perhaps not big enough. They only contracted for $2.1 million for needed medical supplies. Primarily masks and some breathing equipment. Considering what the government usually pays for stuff, that is not a lot of stuff being bought when one considers the entire country. Plus, the first contract was not given out until March 6, then two more about one week apart. So, the last contract was let on March 20th. You know, like last Friday. All us fools can do is hope these folks have a hellacious turn around time.
By the way, the info on the website came from someone commenting on Mark Bear’s post. I didn’t recognize the name, but hell I am old. Sometimes I don’t even recognize my own name.

From what I’ve read and from personal experience, people in the early stages of Alzheimers and Lewy Body Dementia are also prone to lose smell and taste perception. I’ve seen it happen. Now if we had testing available one could be sure, couldn’t he? But noooooooooo, as Belushi used to say.
