Let’s Talk About the Coronavirus Conundrum

Read Time:5 Minute, 38 Second

by Gregory B. Gonzalez

After spending a grueling two weeks of physical rehab due to having a stroke, I wanted nothing more than to go home. Spending nearly a month in the hospital, bored out of my mind, and pushing my body to some semblance of working order was not my idea of a restful recovery. So when one of my therapists came to see me on what was supposed to be my discharge day, he said, “Good news! We’re keeping you another week!”

Incredulous, I snapped, “What?! I’m going to be locked up with you sadists for another seven days?” Just the thought of it made me want to grab my call button cord, wrap it around my throat, and take a nosedive off the opposite side of my bed. Even though the hospital was only a few miles from my house, it suddenly felt like it might as well have been on the other side of the world. I said, “Have I not been making any progress or something?”

My therapist said, “That’s just it, in our morning staff meeting, we were discussing all of our patients in the rehab unit, and of all of them, you’re the one who has made the most progress, so we called your insurance caseworker and recommended that you would benefit from another week. Don’t think of this as a punishment, it’s actually a good thing!” He slapped me on the shoulder and left the room.

Sitting in a wheelchair, my buttcheeks going numb, I rolled my eyes and said to nobody in particular, “Great! I screwed up in reverse! I’m never getting out of here!”

I know, you’re probably wondering what the point of that story was. Well, it’s this- as much as I dreaded the thought of another week in rehab hell, I focused less on the time and more on doing what I had to do and working to get out of there.  That was my goal and by the end of the week, I realized my therapist was right. Being kept in therapy was for my own good.

I know that isolating yourself is hard, but it’s for your own good. It’s so that you won’t get infected by coronavirus or inadvertently infect anyone else. But it’s not just about you- it’s also about making it easier for the people who are taking care of us.

After all, the plain simple truth is, if everyone gets sick, who’s going to be left to treat us? No one.

On Friday, a crowd of people gathered for one of those ridiculous ‘liberate California!’ rallies protesting the lockdown and the closure of our beaches. This pissed me off for a few reasons, the primary one being that come Monday, most of these misanthropes will be coming down with a scorching case of Covid-19 like STDs after Woodstock. I have only one thing to say to the protestors- Governor Newsom ISN’T taking your freedoms away, you friggin’ idiots! He’s trying to save your lives!

Besides, let’s just say for argument’s sake that he opens up the nail salons, beauty salons, restaurants, and other businesses. What makes you so dumb as to think that A: You won’t catch Corona at some point, or that, B: All non-essential businesses would be willing to open up during a pandemic anyway? Not everyone is just as dumb as you!

The second thing that pisses me off is these morons who are willing to infect themselves simply so that they can build up antibodies to the virus. Reality check, kiddies- chances are if you get the virus, you’re going to DIE, bottom line. Don’t let all these stories of people who have gotten the virus and survived give you false hope. And even if you do survive, you’ll have put your body through so much trauma that it may never fully recover. Plus, you’ll be wasting resources that could have gone to someone who needs it more, someone who didn’t do it to themselves on purpose.

Besides, have you noticed that the majority of all these protests are primarily white people? Neo-nazis love to scream, “Jews will not replace us!”, but guess what, Sparky? They don’t have to. You’re doing it for them.

Seriously, I think the Walking Brain-dead needs their own ward so they can waste away and rot in peace. Do they want to infect themselves? Great. Awesome. Let them fend for themselves. The only reason Trump and the GOP want the economy opened back up is so that they can have a victory in November and so the white folks can have people to wait on them, babysit their kids, and cut their grass.

Freedom, like money, doesn’t mean a whole lot when you’re dead.

Trump is an idiot because he doesn’t realize the damage he is doing, not only to the country but to his own base. The more his followers listen to his bullshit, the more vulnerable he becomes, and when your disapproval rating goes above 57%, your chances of getting re-elected ain’t looking too bright. A far smarter move would have been to get ahead of the virus and put every damn resource to work before it became a crisis. I guarantee you that if he had, he probably would have attained the love and affection of the American people that he only thinks he has. He would have won a second term easily.

Jared Kushner thinks a million infected and only 60,000 dead is a great victory, but I think he should pull his head out of his ass and get a good whiff of all the dead bodies piling up around him because pretty soon, there isn’t gonna be anyone around to give him any applause for ‘a job well done’.

Despite how it seems, our current dilemma is not our ‘new normal’, it’s just our present reality. And even if it was, what is ‘normal’, anyway? We left normal in the rearview mirror four years ago. But again, it’s just our present reality. It can be changed if we’re smart enough to learn from it.

Take a minute and look around you- the reality is trying ‘get back to normal’. But the problem is that too many people have deluded themselves into creating their own personal pocket version of reality, only seeing life for what they want it to be and not for what it is. It’s got to stop.

I want to believe that we will come out the better for this, but not if we’re still clinging to the things that got us here to begin with.

Jess, trust me when I tell you that Mississippi has plenty of sun and in a week or two it, Alabama, Louisiana, and Georgia will be hitting the 90 plus degree plus mark with 90% humidity. It will be like a free sauna everywhere. Walk outside, stand there for 15 minutes, and likely die from a heat stroke. One would think that the gulf would provide some relief, and it does occasionally in the form of a hurricane.

😉 We have sun all the time though, do you guys? I sat by my pool in the sun today. I do my runs first thing in the am so I do not catch the heat. We only have earthquakes, floods and forest fires, cannot think of any hurricanes that have hit but we do have a tsunami warning deal should the need arise.

That was Orange County Greg, that’s like Mississippi with sun, so that doesn’t count 🙂 I couldn’t believe it when I saw that and there was some kind of thing up at the capitol building also this past weekend. It’s like all the morons decided to inhabit the same space at the same time so they wouldn’t have to fight over who would get to use that one brain cell they pass around. I’m still keeping my ass home and this week has brought us new and inventive ways of bucket listing things. I think my guy is just doing, what he would like to see in a porn movie for his list though. Kent did one of those before he died, see told you guys I have a type 🙂 I am being more circumspect. Ah who am I kidding, I am doing weird shit because the bucket list has to be confined to our homes and is only lasting 2 weeks.

I’m staying home as well Jess, no matter if they open the state. I live in Florida and our governor is an idiot and is well on his way to opening us up wide. He doesn’t care and is a good friend of THE BIG PIG as Mike is fond of calling Herr Trump.

Supposedly they are going to start re opening some things here Friday. I’ll stick to what we are doing for now. I have been enjoying being away from all the unnecessary bullshit, although I truly miss seeing my best friend and my aunts on a more regular basis. Before I saw my aunts at least 3 times a week, now not so much and I miss those old goats. Mainly because they would cook really well and send me home with food 🙂

Over here in Blighty, it appears members of BAME communities are more susceptible to Covid-19.

Nobody knows why yet. Any stats over there suggesting this?

What’s a BAME community? Never heard that one and I was stationed at Hendon many years ago.

These are the same people who don’t believe in science, global warming or evolution. They are strong pro-lifers meaning not only forcing women to have dangerous illegal abortions but being against gun control and supporting corporal punishment for prisoners, as well as locking people up for coming into this country to escape starvation in their own counties. We will have a better world when 3% of them die of covid.

I have to agree with you. Losing 3% of such idiots is no less whatsoever, only a gain.

They are not pro life at all they are for forced birth. If they believed in pro life they would be against the death penalty and most of them are not.

If he feels like jumping there’s this bridge not far from Mar a Lago. . . To me our biggest problem is idiocy and this is the first positive step in curing it that I can remember

If that happened the old song “Happy Days Are Here Again” would ring across America.

I saw a movie on Netflix the other night that was something about a battle for Los Angeles that probably came out of a Trumpers dream. Aliens wanting to colonize earth for its water. Sadly, after it had decimated the entire 3rd Division of the Marine Corps 5 or 6 “Heroes” figured out how to take down the bad old aliens and go charging into battle against this superior alien force and wins the day. This is how a lot of people, especially many of the Trumpers see the fight against the virus. Trump loves to pretend he is that hero jumping to the rescue. “just time” in this case would have been around late January, but these fools will be cheering anyway. It was not a good movieon any level, just like Trump’s presidency.

Mike, I watched the same movie and as a former Marine I thought it was pretty sad. I mean, there is little doubt that an alien force that has the technology to get here from some far planet is going to have us beat on the tech edge but to think that the Marines were going into battle that unprepared was ridiculous. Well, considering the leadership of this country maybe not so ridiculous. I actually like a good war movie at times, but hopefully the 3rd Marine division is better prepared than that. And for christ sake, Los Angeles has over 100,000 gun toting gang members. Where the hell were they? But I would not be surprised if Trump took it for reality.

Sad to say I am hopeful, when I see the Trumplings protesting, spitting at police, carrying Trump signs and wearing MAGA hats, that the Coronavirus will visit them, and soon.

Speaking of getting the virus to get immunity–it’s a freaking coronavirus. This is the group of viruses that typically doesn’t confer long term immunity to those who recover. Why the hell do you think we keep getting colds year after year? In actuality, there are very few viruses that confer long-term, much less life-long immunity, upon recovery. That’s why we have vaccines, and that’s why vaccines, even the measles vaccines, have to be re-upped on some regular basis. My inclination is to be okay with these ignorant jackasses getting sick. But if they do, they will put our health care professionals at risk, along with every other innocent person they come into contact with. That’s too high a price to pay for a bit of karma.
For the last couple of years, my solution for dealing with the Trumplings has been to fence off Nebraska and keep them there for their safety and our sanity. I still think this is a viable solution. If the Trumplings are out of the way, the rest of us can get on with our lives and learn how to function in this pandemic. They can have their perfectly white world and yell and scream to their hearts’ content. We’ll have a functioning society again. It’s a win-win.

You are right about COVID-19 not conferring immunity. I read earlier today in one of the many papers I read daily, that some recent studies show that immunity is NOT conferred, as a number of those who had the virus were again testing positive. That sucks.

I also lived among Trumplings, when I lived in S. Georgia. No one knew I was a liberal until 2008 when I put an Obama/Biden sign in my yard, and someone tore it down the following night. My next-door neighbor didn’t speak to me again and would glare at me when we would pass in the store or he would see me out in the yard. Before the sign went up he would always wave and say hi. I left there in 2013 and don’t look back. It was a place of hard hearts.
