Progress Matters—You Either Join the Human Race Or You Don’t

Read Time:1 Minute, 33 Second

by Glenn R. Geist

No bigot hates just one group, or so I’ve been saying for a very long time. If you’re part of a less than universally popular group: racial, ethnic, political, or otherwise, somebody thinks poorly of you and since we really always have been a nation of savages it can be expressed in savage ways as well as in more subtle fashion. Some of us get asked where we’re from rather more often than comfortable and if you say something like Minnesota, you may get the follow up like “but where are you really from” or a comment about how well you speak English.

With all the turmoil surrounding the question of which or whose lives matter most or at all, we’ve forgotten the universal bias against immigrants. It’s still here. Public health official Dr. Leana Wen tells us she and Asian looking nurses get spit at, called  “bat eaters,” told to go back to their own countries and worse, although that’s not entirely new.

More than once I’ve been asked if I wouldn’t be more comfortable in “collections” because you people are good at collecting money. (I’m half Jewish) But sure, others have it vastly worse. Others get shot down on the street and in their own homes.

You don’t have to be a true genius though to see that cooperation, working together and pooling resources, would help, but here’s the rub. We are too busy. Frankly, not one thing is going to be done about police practices, court practices, oppressive laws, brutal jails, or any of the other abuses of our day. Because of a slogan? the claimed sole authority of some group? Progress matters. You either join the human race or you don’t.

Fuck it. I am sorry that some people are feeling put upon because of their race, be they black, white, red, yellow, brown or any combination thereof. Just as soon as the world’s 71/2 billion people give me the authority to make me able to make every person think the same way I will immediately do that. While I am at it I will end all wars and probably all religions as well. It may become an awfully dull world, but that will be my platform as soon as we have an election or apointment as the world dictator or tyrant.

Privilege? There is no privilege beyond what you make it. Blacks think they are privileged because they are oppressed, therefore they can riot, and burn down their own towns and businesses to no real purpose. Whites, some of them anyway, think they are privileged because they don’t burn down their own towns and businesses. It’s all tortured rhetoric that makes little difference to what’s going to happen tomorrow. It is what you make it.

It’s impossible to get past the idea that “Blacks” and “whites” are such large and diverse groups that no meaningful characteristic can be assigned – not even skin color. Doing so is, in addition, the definition of racism. Most people notice that gross generalization is usually the foundation on which stupid ideas and lies are constructed. then there’s you, in Dunning Krueger fashion thinking I don’t see what you’re trying to do.

Being wronged doesn’t make you right, or smart or objective – nor does it convey a license to be just as bad. I won’t have anything to do with a group that protects a childish slogan and neglects the problem it’s supposed to be concerned with. There are those who try to find common cause and I have been one of those for my entire adulthood. But that’s not what these times are about. It’s all about sound and fury and dissolving what holds civilization is about. But most of all, it’s not the people who are over the top because they’ve been under the boot heel – it’s those who wallow in false humility and weep that they were born in a former colony founded in European, Christian colonial exploitation. Guilt is not hereditary any more than is virtue or honesty or wisdom.

The bottom line is that if you will topple a statue of Jackson because he owned slaves and not care what he did to the native tribes means you think you have some sort of privilege you don’t have.

I don’t understand any of this. Why do some people condemn me for being white, or for exercising something known as “white privilege” for commenting on FB or elsewhere? I will be the first to admit I don’t agree with what appears to be BLM’s agenda, which is much like the NRA’s, and that is nothing we can do is wrong, and we are in charge, just look at the constitution which says nothing about one group having more rights than the other. We are supposed to be equal.

Glenn, I understand where you are coming from but in reality no one can make you feel bad about your ancestry but you. Most likely you had little to noting to say about it. In fact most of them had little to say about who they are so it really isn’t you they are mad , It is their ancesters, ot even yours that they are angry about. They are saying they did not get a fair chance at life , which may or may not be true but there is nothing that you personnally can do about it. That is for them and society to work out, not you and that person. You, Mike and many others have said you are not racist, so leave it at that. Granted, if you good wave a magic wand and every thing would suddenly be better for evey human being that was willing to work for it would be different, but you can’t, at least I don’t think you can. On the other hand don’t feel hard at people who have played by the rules and life has fucked them over and they are a bit pissed about. I might be too.

IT’s not that I approve of every relative or ancestor, but nearly ever day I listen to one vicious tirade or other about white people and their privilege. As you say, I had nothing to do with it and would much prefer to have been born a Maharaja or something. Most of the world of course is not white and all people have individual advantages and disadvantages. Being white conveys no “original sin” and if a minority other white people in certain places are bigots, their sins are neither part of me or chargeable to me. You’re said as much but I’m sick of it and the idea that being angry justifies actions or words that otherwise would not be.

I’m aware of how people are treated in the larger part of the world, from the Untouchables in India to the white and other minorities in china or various tribes in Africa. It’s how humans are and always have been. For my part I would like to help end it, but that’s more impossible day by day.

Informed this morning that my attempt to put things in better context was proof of my white privilege and it’s really hard not to respond to such idiocy, childishness and solipsistic stupidity. Can I resign from the Liberal tribe?
