Does the British Media Continue To Incite Division?

by Neil Bamforth

The official total number of deaths from COVID-19 in the United Kingdom, at the time of writing, stands at around 45,775 people. That is, of course, horrific. Whether it is remotely accurate of course is another matter. A radio station called LBC, which stands for ‘Leading Britain’s Conversation’, on a show hosted by James O’Brien, has already increased that to 50,000 in a live broadcast shortly before I began writing.

Comments on their Facebook page include people stating that the true figure is 60,000, 65,000, and, along with those two figures, a further 15,000 who, according to these Facebook experts, has, for some unfathomable reason, remained unaccounted for.

Other comments, supporting Professor Karol Sikora, a former Chief of The World Health Organisation (WHO), who claims the actual figures are considerably lower – nearer 20 to 30,000 maximum, are being ridiculed by keyboard warriors clearly under the misapprehension that they know more than the learned Professor.

To muddy the waters further, another Professor, Carl Heneghan, from Oxford University, is claiming the death toll is actually higher than official figures state.

Add to that Public Health England (PHE) admitting they have included deaths of all people infected, even with minor or zero symptoms bothering them, into the overall figures – as one journalistic wag put it, “If you get hit by a bus and die, but have tested positive for COVID-19, you didn’t die of a large bus hitting you, you died of COVID-19” – it is, frankly, impossible to actually know what the actual death toll is.

Nevertheless, James O’Brien on LBC has decided, seemingly at random, that rounding the current official figures up a bit qualifies as responsible journalism.

Towns and cities in the UK very close to another lockdown all have high numbers of Muslim residents. This is, of course, unfortunate.

It is also quite true.

Leicester, recently locally locked down again due to a spike. My old hometown of Oldham, which is very close indeed to a local lockdown. Bradford, Rochdale, and so on.

All have particularly high populations of Muslims.

You don’t have to be an investigative journalist to see a common denominator here. Neither, come to that, do you have to be a racist Islamophobe.

Already, in Oldham, a local Muslim ‘community leader’ – I always sniff suspiciously when I hear the term ‘local community leader’. Have you ever seen such a position advertised in any jobs section of a newspaper or anywhere else? No? Me neither.

Anyway, this ‘local community leader’, from Oldham’s Muslim community, seems to think it is anyone else’s fault but theirs. Apparently, too many in his community didn’t understand the instructions regarding social distancing and not mingling with anyone, not from your household.

Excuse me? I happen to know that Oldham Council sent leaflets to all households in every language you could think of, and quite a few you wouldn’t think of coming to that.

Have the media even come close to mentioning the bleeding obvious? No. Oh! We can’t! It’s Islamophobic!

Er. No. It happens to be correct. As in true. Since when did ‘truth’ become ‘phobic’ about anything? If something is true then it’s true. Such is life.

So. The British media are happily increasing the COVID-19 death toll at random. They are ignoring an obvious and clear cause of local spikes. They are fully aware that everybody knows the reason for the local spikes in the aforementioned towns, yet refuse to acknowledge it.

The result? Increased hostility to Muslim communities.

The result of massaging COVID-19 deaths? Increased hostility to the government, scientists, and, on occasion, the medical profession for some unfathomable reason.

I always thought the sole purpose of ‘the media’ was to report the news as fact. To report the facts that made the news.

The way British media is carrying on lately, Enid bloody Blyton books would be more accurate to the truth than British media.

Given that we only learn so many things by watching and listening to the media, they surely have a duty of care to only give us the facts. Not their personal opinions. Not their own prejudices. The facts.

It’s a sad day when the realization hits you that the British media don’t actually care about the facts anymore.

They care about making more news. They care about creating division and hatred. Mostly because, these days, division and hatred, in their minds, keeps them in business.

After all, when they describe a BLM march as ‘mostly peaceful’ after 28 police officers are injured, you do feel that realization I just mentioned hitting you.

It’s such a pity we can’t just sack them all and start again.

So it’s fake news. Where have I heard that before.

Ha! Sorry Neil, but you do sound like one of our Trump supporters 🙂

Holte : Which? If we’re given conflicting information, how do we know what’s correct?

If we learn information has been withheld, how do we know the truth.

Fake news? No. Manipulated to suit different narratives, certainly.

I prefer accurate truths – even if they’re unpalatable to me.

Mike : 🤣🤣🤣… I see what you mean… Thing is, calling the facts fake isn’t the same as calling out manipulation of the facts.

Saying red is yellow is ‘fake’, manipulating red to yellow is too?

When you’re given conflicting information, some people choose the “facts” that match their world view. When the waters are muddied, deliberately or not, what a person chooses to believe, reveals character.

Great point Holte. Contray to Kelly Anne Conway’s assertion there are no “alternative” facts.

Holte : So which Covid-19 numbers are ‘fact’?

Official figures – given PHEs acknowledgement of those included?

    The WHO professor?

    The Oxford professor?

    LBC?

    Facebook commenters?

    A) I’d like to know and B) I’d like to know how you know.

Personally I’m reluctant, to say the least, to believe any of them at this point.

Bill : Indeed there aren’t. The problem occurs when we have no idea what is and isn’t a fact.

It’s quite simple. You go with the most reliable source and that won’t be FB commenters, the Right Wing LBC, or any other Right or Left-wing source. Don’t go with any who have an agenda. Trust the BBC. Like CNN it’s an excellent source of reliable, well-researched information. There, problem solved.

Mike : LBC has jerked left. Mind you, they’ve always been iffy on facts so it hardly matters.

    The BBC? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣… And breath…🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣… Stomach hurts… 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣… Oh dear….

The BBC are haemorrhaging viewers / licence payers by being utterly biased in favour of left wing ideals. They’ve announced £2 billion for diversity programming in a country that’s 86% white British… £2 billion!!!! Lost the plot have the BBC

Are you sure you aren’t a Trump fan there Neil? Your description of the BBC sounds like a Trumper’s description of CNN. I expect both are just examples of Right-Wing Hate Speech.

Steve : The BBC used to be neutral. It’s paid for by us through a licence fee. Back in Thatchers days it started showing a bias in her favour and was caught out. Tories paying their licence fee were just as annoyed as Labour licence payers.

The BBC has always been held in worldwide esteem for it’s quality and standards.

Today, it’s been caught out so often – by either it’s journalists showing clear bias – Laura Kuensberg a prime example – or via obfuscation of the news, it’s now worse than Channel 4.

We don’t pay for Channel 4 so they can do what they like.

We’d be just as annoyed with the BBC if they did Boris cheer leading rather than Labour cheer leading.

The fact is, they’ve lost the trust of more and more people for failing, far too often, to remain unbiased.

It’s a shame but such is life.

Shouldn’t have turned Doctor Who into a woman 🤪😉

NN is talking BS as usual with the usual thread!
Hey NN should have watched Newsnight last night and the deaths in Leicester have been lower than some of the country! So there are questions about why it was locked down. Of course you’ll question the facts as it’s the BBC you’d rather believe Talk radio!

Cherries : Heard of but never tuned in to Talk Radio… I’ll give it a go, cheers!

Odd isn’t it. Leicester local lock down. Oldham close to. Rochdale, Bradford, Luton, Rotherham etc etc all high on the official watch list for possible /impending spikes.

Now the. What’s the common denominator these places share?… Mmmm… They’re in England? They have football clubs?… Oh!… All have particularly large Muslim communities!

Well! I’ll be! Who would have thought it! What an extraordinary coincidence!!!

As usual most people here can see who’s attempting to incite racism.

I don’t listen to LBC but I do know they have mostly right wing broadcasters. James O’Brien is definitely to the left as I read comments. I listen to BBC radio myself and the political programmes lean to the right, since brexit unfortunately, but long live the BBC.

    In today’s paper just read:
    Fury at Tory BAME claim
Called to apologise the Conservative MP for Calder Valley. ‘It’s disgraceful’

Figures for those areas are not as high as NN says however because a lot of bame people have to go to work in factories and live in large family groups in those towns of course there will be infections. Didn’t mention all the crowds that packed the pubs in those particular towns did you Norman/Neil? N/N for short. Or the thousands who flocked to beaches elsewhere ( we had a heatwave)!

You could be right about football clubs actually there seem to be a lot of the old fashioned racists type among them. They fill the pubs too!
Ps. Luton isn’t in the North nowhere near.

Just read some interesting figures, most of the areas ‘up North’ that N/N mentioned are up to 91% a white population.
    None are predominantly Muslim.
Maybe all the white peoples who packed the pubs caused the so called spike. I’m a white English woman by the way.
Too much time on my hands you think but washing pegged out and Sunday roast in the oven 😊

Cherries. Oldham is 20% Muslim. New cases causing the spike are over 85% Muslim.

They aren’t bothering to even try.

The aforementioned towns are all spiking because of their Muslim communities behavior.

The clue is ‘communities’…. Idiot beach goers and protest marchers come from far and wide, hence no spike. Muslims from close, pretty insular communities, hence a spike.

As to large Muslim families. Might be less poverty if they took a rest from breeding 5, 7, 10 kids per family.
