What Is Your Awesome and Comprehensive COVID-19 Plan?

Read Time:3 Minute, 15 Second

by Kelly Kidd

So for those just thoroughly disgusted with pretty much every move made during the pandemic, and I know there are a lot out there, what’s your plan? How would you manage the pandemic?  I’m very interested. Seriously. Because as an educated and trained public health worker with over 20 years in the field who, until the pandemic necessitated job eliminations, it was pandemic updates and pivots all the time for me. As a public health professional, I would be able to come up with a few ideas, yet not a comprehensive plan for the nation. I would have far more questions than answers.

So what is your plan? I assume there is one you’re thinking of because those who think all that’s being done is so wrong must know what’s right.

How would you reopen schools? What is your plan should there be an outbreak in schools like there has been in nursing homes? What will be done should educators and other staff become ill and cannot work?

How would you clean? How would you mitigate liability for unsafe work conditions? This would be everywhere.

How would you approach retail and hospitality (including bars and restaurants)?

How would you approach outdoor spaces, entertainment venues, parks, amusement parks, zoos, travel, and other aspects of daily life?

How would you ensure the health system doesn’t become overloaded?

How would you jumpstart the economy?

What would you do about the masses of people who cannot find work or have lost health care?

What’s the plan for testing? Who do you test and when? How long will it take for results?

How would you collect, track, and report data?

What’s the plan for people who become ill? Do they isolate? When is it safe for them to return to work?

How would you notify others they may have been exposed in a HIPPA compliant way?

What treatments would be available and when should they be given?

What would you mandate and what would you consider a suggested guideline? What’s your rationale?

When would mandates and suggestions change? In other words, what is your threshold for human wellness, safety, and life?

How would you enforce your plan? Because there will be people who protest it, regardless of what it is. There will be people who do not follow the plan.

What are your contingencies when things in your plan go wonky? Because every plan needs to be justified… who / what are your resources? If for you the CDC, science, and government are so awful, who and what would you look to for information and guidance? How do you justify that this is the right plan?

How will you engage in leadership support and community support for this plan?

How would you measure success?

How will you afford all of this? Who pays?

Keep in mind the following:

* The virus is not going away anytime soon. In fact, it will mutate.
* A vaccine is at least 2 years out.
* Testing is 7-10 days for a result, at least.
* It takes an average of 5 days to show symptoms, and up to 14 days.
* You can have the virus and not show symptoms.
* High survival rate does not mean a low illness rate.
* High survival rate doesn’t mean there were no hospitalizations, ICU, vent needs.
* The fastest-growing population of being seriously ill is young adults.
* We don’t know all there is to know about the virus. New things will come up as we learn.
* The virus is airborne. It can travel 8 feet easily, and up to 30 in some scenarios (moving air, while moving, and the like).

So, dazzle me with your comprehensive and awesome plan that puts all those awful decision-makers to shame.

When I wrote this, I was thinking about all who complain about pretty much every protective focused pandemic decision being made. Those who say we should just open already, rights and freedoms are being taken away, liberals want to keep people in hardship, and the like. I have been deeply frustrated by those who openly spout off like this yet offer no viable alternatives.

The comments have highlighted an aspect I hadn’t thought about in detail – talking about our individual plans. How we navigate the landscape for ourselves and with those close to us.

I appreciate this perspective being part of the conversation. Thank you.

Stacey,

There are so many aspects to emergency response. Like you, I’m certain there are national and global disaster plans at the ready. Even if not for this specific situation, they would provide a solid and adaptable foundation.

While I am not surprised by the nature of our president and other national leaders, I did have hope that this pandemic would spark a focus on humanity. That bubble quickly burst.

Maybe the plans are in the White House bunker? (Couldn’t resist!)

Bill,

I agree that this is our environment for the long term. We will continue to rethink the way we live, work, and play for years to come. Though I’m not sure we will need to be as automated as you suggest, I have a feeling the next 6-8 months will cause me to question this several times over.

Rachael,

That’s a great plan. I keep having dreams that I’ve forgotten my mask. That makes me hyper vigilant in waking life! As we move forward, my hope is that this becomes second nature to all.

A well thought and presented piece. Thankyou Kelly. It certainly stirs the conscious and stimulates conversation.

The good news, I suppose, is that our past administration(s) crafted just exactly those plans and I have to expect that somewhere those plans still exist and that they are much more comprehensive than most of us can contemplate.

I suspect Kelly can contemplate!

In reality, nothing is going to work until there are enough dead people to convince the idiots that this real and dangerous and the economy will likely never bo back to where it was. Then, and only then can we begin to put fixes in places over the long term. Even when a vaccine it will take years to get everyone vaccinated that will stop this disease.

Nothing is going to be easy, and perhaps a complete change of culture is needed for America. Several things are obvious for everyone except the republicans. First, in-person transactions are probably a thing of the past. That means that schools and most shopping are conducted virtually. Not the best way, but necessary. It will require a heavy investment in virtual communication; it is doable. Heavy investment in food processing by machine. I am not sure that this is doable currently. All restaurants and bars are take out only.

It is important to keep these plans in our faces because it’s easy to forget. Last week I walked into the grocery store and realized I had forgotten to wear my mask. I almost ran back to the car to get it. Wearing a mask, after all, is part of my plan. Thanks for this Kelly.
