Review: El Capitan—’The Dawn Wall’—A Documentary

Read Time:52 Second

by Bill Formby

Since there are already a couple of reviews posted I will keep this brief. El Capitan is a huge chunk of rock in Yosemite National Park. It is a favorite of what is known as “free climbers” because of the difficulty in scaling it 3000 feet summit.

There is, however, one aspect that has been considered insurmountable. “The Dawn Wall”, so named because it is the first part to receive sunlight at the break of dawn. That is until Tommy Caldwell, an elite rock climber, decided it could be beaten. He enlisted Kevin Jorgeson as his partner and they attacked the wall.

This documentary is one of the most inspiring stories of sheer determination, unselfishness I have witnessed in a very long time. It took 19 days for the two men to climb a sheer rock face of 3000 feet, never coming off the wall once they started. This is one of the best on Netflix.

OMG El Cap is the sight to behold in Yosemite. Many other great things about this place but the majesty of it is actually awe inspiring.

Thanks, Howard. I think I was most impressed by Tommy Caldwell’s insistence that his partner finish with him. There isn’t much of that kind of unselfishness around anymore. Glad you enjoyed it.
