The Weird Correlation Between S’Mores and Covid

Public health officials, epidemiologists, and infectious disease experts are all front and center in looking out for emerging patterns on COVID-19. Now, add Hershey into the mix.
The chocolate manufacturing giant has spotted its own trend during the pandemic involving a favorite campfire treat. That find: In areas of the US where there has been a surge in coronavirus cases, there has been a simultaneous uptick in demand for s’mores ingredients. Hershey says chocolate sales specifically have been up 40% to 50% in places that saw more COVID cases, as opposed to those where the virus is more under control.
CNBC speculates the s’mores binging in virus-heavy areas could be attributed to more people hanging out these days in their backyards around the grill or bonfire.
In a Thursday interview, Hershey CEO Michele Buck said local COVID numbers have actually helped drive the company’s marketing of the chocolate people need for their s’mores. “We were able to use the case count trajectory as a foreshadow of where we should focus some of those efforts and build displays and put media in those markets,” she noted.
Another popular Hershey’s confection that’s flying off shelves during the pandemic: Twizzlers, Buck added on an analysts call Thursday, per Business Insider. That’s because, she says, consumers are seeking concession-style treats to nosh on during more at-home movie nights.
All of these sweet comfort items have “turned out to be incredibly important for consumers during this very difficult time, where they [want] to cling to as much normalcy as possible,” she says. (Read more COVID-19 stories.)

Ok so Call me Steve has hit more of mine. Milky Way, Snickers and Ben and Jerries. Ok so Milky Way, Snickers and Ben and Jerries and Ferrero Rocher. Ok so those and Godiva chocolates. Ok so all that and Sees candy. WHAT, you expected me to stop? Get to know me already people 😉
Cadbury’s cream eggs and those little hard shell eggs. Ok so all those and Peeps. Ok so all of those and Ike and Mikes. Hershey’s chocolate is nasty so I have nothing else to add at this moment 🙂 Oooh so I lied, sue me. Toblerone bars white and milk chocolate I cannot ever decide which one is the best one. I have not looked back since I was introduced to those last year.
I’ve always had a sweet tooth, and needing to stay home within reach of immediate gratification and out of reach of my gym is not helping the eternal struggle – that’s for sure.
Unhappily, I gained about 10 more ‘Covid pounds’ than I would have liked. Now I’m trying to lose it. Wish me luck…I’ll need it.
I lost some that I already could not afford to lose. I am not even hitting 100lbs right now, no matter what I do. Prolly because I am doing ALL of my cooking at home and not going out to eat as often.
I’m swimming a lot right now for my own exercise. Still running but not as often and I hate that, makes me feel all sluggish if I don’t work out..
I have never had a craving for sweets, and I drink very little so I have lost about 20 pounds through this pandemic.
