A flight attendants union is pleading for more travel safeguards after an attack against a crew member on a Southwest flight over the weekend.

Per a letter from Lyn Montgomery, president of Transport Workers Union Local 556, to the airline’s CEO, a flight attendant was “seriously assaulted” by a passenger on a flight from Sacramento, Calif., to San Diego on Sunday morning, which caused injuries to the flight attendant’s face and the loss of two teeth, reports USA Today.

A Southwest spokesman confirmed the verbal and physical assault and said the passenger was taken into custody. “Unfortunately, this is just one of many occurrences,” Montgomery wrote, noting an “unprecedented number” of passenger misconduct incidents in recent weeks that are now at an “intolerable level,” with passengers becoming more and more aggressive. According to union statistics, there have been 477 such incidents on Southwest flights between April 8 and May 15.

Southwest isn’t the only airline facing these issues: The FAA says it’s received about 2,500 reports of unruly passengers since Jan. 1, with about 1,900 of them tied to passengers not complying with face mask rules.

A typical year sees 100 to 150 such reports. The agency has already proposed stiff fines for a number of the alleged offenders. The Southwest flight attendants union is asking management for backup, especially as more people start flying again and consuming alcohol in an “already volatile environment,” per Montgomery’s letter.

Among the union’s demands: an increase in the number of federal air marshals on flights; consistency in consequences for those who violate airline policies; and better communication with passengers that “egregious behavior” could lead to fines, jail time, and a lifetime ban from flying Southwest.

“We ask that you take a strong stance to ensure that unruly passengers are not welcome to travel with us. Period. Full stop,” the letter notes. (Read more Southwest Airlines stories.)

Not long ago, these criminals were demanding we carry citizenship papers and that wasn’t offensive to them. Now we can’t even get papers to show we’re safe to be around or be required to aid public safety by getting vaccinated. There aren’t enough nasty names to hurl at these radical revolutionary criminals.

Beginning with the Tea Party, “freedom” was re-defined as lawlessness and anarchy because every law detracts from freedom. How long does that become the cornerstone of a party before the party becomes a gang? This cannot end well if we don’t begin serious law enforcement. The hell with Marijuana, this is a revolution!

It’s not just anti-maskers, it is a general “freedom” from all legal regulation and social moiré that these “special people” feel entitled to. These are the same people who deny the legitimacy of the Biden Presidency, deny science, attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, parade down the streets with their guns and torches and set siege to State Capitals These wackos are a real threat to our society.

Trump didn’t start it, but he sure as hell empowered it. He led by example, flaunting his invulnerability, violating every social norm, every nicety, every rule and law he could, violating every person he could (from contractors, to Stormy Daniels, to the G20 dignitaries, to the Queen) in his “me first, and f*** you” assault on dignity, and then bragged about it.

Absolutely right, and you are correct in saying it didn’t start with Trump, but if not, it was well hidden until he reared his ugly head.

Make it a federal felony to assault an airline employee on duty. Breaking rocks in the hot sun.

Well said indeed. I agree with every word.

Can you believe this? It was about a mask, and that isn’t quite clear in this story, but I read it elsewhere. I blame Trump for all this crazy. It’s his fault and I don’t care who disagrees.

These fucking anti-maskers would qualify for Hitler’s Brown Shirts.
