Read My Lips: It’s About the Guns Stupid!

Read Time:2 Minute, 26 Second

How many broken parents testify at today’s congressional hearing won’t matter to most Republican representatives and it won’t matter to some Democrat representatives. I’m not just talking about DINOs like Manchin and Sinema. There are more than just a few who take million-dollar handouts from big money gun groups and organizations like the NRA.

An example of one of these ‘few’ is a progressive darling who voted against the Brady Bill, gun research, and then there’s this from the Washington Post:

“After the Sandy Hook shooting, he said it was “more important” to address mental health than the availability of firearms, adding, “This is not one of my major issues.”
The poisonous tentacles of the gun lobby reach into the darkest corners of government. The talking points haven’t changed since Columbine. Politicians are still talking about mental health, and red flag laws, with the latest less than brilliant Right Wing idea: open sealed juvenile records for those under 21 trying to buy guns. They can’t just raise the legal age to buy guns, which would be much easier because the NRA would object as it might hurt the profit lines of the gun manufacturers.
It doesn’t matter how much heart-wrenching testimony we hear, or how many pictures we see of murdered children; it only matters to political power which is bought by moneyed corporations like the gun manufacturers. They literally pour billions of dollars into political coffers, on both sides of the aisle, so as not to damage their bottom line.
So let’s sue them? Nope. Can’t do that thanks to Bush Jr., who reversed Bill Clinton’s executive decision to make gun manufacturers liable. It was one of Dubya’s first acts as president. There’s no need to wonder why.
Make no mistake, ‘something’ will be done in the wake of the Uvalde tragedy but it will be so minor and inconsequential as to be almost laughable if it wasn’t so sad. To save our children we need to enact responsible, sweeping gun laws, that ban so-called assault rifles, prohibit civilians from private ownership of handguns, and require training and extensive background investigations before you can even buy a rifle or shotgun.
Responsible gun laws don’t violate the Second Amendment as no one is saying you can’t own a gun you just can’t own any kind of gun; nor can just anyone buy a gun.
If we continue in this direction the day will come when you can buy a gun along with your bag of potato chips while gassing up your car at the local mini-mart.
As a quick aside “AR” doesn’t mean assault or automatic rifle.

It was initialed after the company that created the weapon, ‘ArmaLite Rifle.’
The AR-15 was first developed in the late 1950s as a military weapon by ArmaLite Rifle, but the company had limited success in selling the gun. Those were the days.

Almost everybody owns guns in Switzerland. But, unlike in the U.S.A., the Swiss do not have maniacs committing mass public shootings, kids finding their parent’s guns and shooting other kids, school shootings, the Swiss do not settle arguments by shooting each other unlike Americans, and there are fewer incidents of violent crimes with guns in the streets of Swiss cities such as Zurich, Basel, Lucerne, and Geneva, than in cities of the U.S.A. Even though almost everybody has guns in Switzerland, Switzerland is still a much safer country to live in than our own U.S.A.!

So what are the Swiss doing right with their country and their culture, that we as Americans are doing all wrong? That is why in my next lifetime, I want to either reincarnate in Switzerland, or reincarnate on an Earth like “Class M” in Star Trek jargon planet, where every nation on that Earth like planet, is just like how it is in Switzerland on planet Earth!

Perhaps it’s a minor detail, but the AR-15 is an autoloading rifle and it’s a different weapon that is used by the military. It’s intended for civilian use as it is not fully automatic – like a machine gun. But everything is about money. None the less it’s become a cult fetish and people prefer it to other weapons with the same or better performance. In what other nation would one see signs averring that “God Guns and Guts” were what built our country? While I’m infuriated by the hyperbolic rhetoric about this weapon, I none the less think it’s time to recognize that the American public contains far too many individuals that should not have and cannot be trusted with similar weapons. We can attempt to identify such people or we can restrict them for private citizens entirely. That’s a question that our system seems unable to deal with. Guns in general have a cult around them that includes insurrectionists and racists and others looking for war. What seems simple is not simple in the US.

It’s “intended for civilian use,” but as a military weapon. Period. It’s marketed to men who have serious insecurities about their penis. It is designed solely to efficiently and effectively kill people.
Don’t bother with semantic BS. I can sell a hand grenade as a “concussive tree clearing tool.” It’s still a f***ing hand grenade.

I’m English and don’t understand the legalitiies but such a well written article. It’s unbelievable that no one seems to be able to stop the sale of these horrific weapons of war to civilians including young teenagers and it’s all about money.

It’s the same reason you keep electing Tories, even though they constantly and endlessly stab most Brits in the back.
Most people, by their very nature, are easy to convince that what’s worst for them is actually best. Our internal echo chamber is easily manipulated and will almost always opt for what appears to be the easiest to understand choice. Even when a critical assessment shows it to be a bald-faced lie. In other words, a lot of people are naturally stupid.
