When I lived in South Florida I spent a lot of time watching The Weather Channel (TWC), at least between June and November, hurricane season. I remember it as a sober, well researched source of scientific information dedicated to predicting the track and intensity of these boomers.

So, when my friend and fellow contributor Glenn R. Geist, a current resident of South Florida, expressed his concern over the recent potential track of Hurricane Matthew, I sympathized with him, having experienced both Andrew and Wilma, and lots of tropical storms and near misses while living in the Sunshine State.

I decided to take a look at TWC, something I hadn’t done in years, and was shocked by what I saw. Sober, intelligent scientists had been replaced by witless, empty headed TV personalities that joked about the winds beginning to strengthen in Aruba, laughing about the “waves” that were smashing into a pier, comparing them to the “waves” at ball games. I watched as the reporting switched to the actual 8AM update, and continued to be astonished and disappointed at the complete lack of scientific, meteorologically based reporting.

I’m not sure when TWC decided to become a fluff-filled, nonsense ridden pseudo-source of reliable weather reporting, but it’s happened, and I will, in sympathy with my South Florida friends, look to more adult, scientific sources of weather tracking information such as AccuWeather, Weather Underground, and etc. That being said I wish them all the best. Hurricane Matthew looks to be a dangerous boomer, so let’s hope that high pressure system drifts further to the east allowing the storm to squeeze between it, and the jetstream so it can head out to sea and away from the United States.

I loved South Florida for about 20 years, like Mike, then I didn’t love it as much so I moved. After I moved there wasn’t another hurricane that threatened what was my house in Miami, until now.
